Course Description:
The ability to write is essential. There are very few classes in college, if any, where you will have the luxury of not having to write for your professor. You need to be able to put your best words forward in a way that will impress people. You need to be able to communicate your thoughts. You need to be able to write well to apply to colleges and to receive scholarships. What better time to start than right now.

Tentative Schedule:
Monday, Wednesday – Drafting
Tuesday and Thursday – Typing

Assignments:
There are a number of things that I have planned for the next six weeks; here are some of the things that you can look forward to…
2 In-class writings per week
3 Essays
2 or 3 Short Stories
Resume
Weekly Quizzes
Final Exam

I understand that you have work from as many as 6 classes a night so my homework assignments will not be lengthy. I do, however, expect them to be done the next day. No excuses.

Formatting:
There is a specific way I would like you to set up your papers...

 In-class writing:
On the top line to the right should be your name followed by the date in MLA form (19 June 2001) on the line below it. I do not need to see the class or my name or the hour. On the third line in the center should be your title. You writing should start on the fifth line. It should be indented. Your paper needs to be double-spaced and be the length that I specify before you start writing.

 Typed Drafts:
Typed drafts need to have your name and the date in the upper right hand corner. They should be at the top of the page and not in the header. There should be three spaces before your title, which should be centered. Your name, date and title should be in 16pt Times New Roman, your title should be bolded. Your text should start after three more spaces. It needs to be 12pt and double-spaced.
Grading:
You will be evaluated on your participation in class through your writing and your behavior.

In-Class writings: 5 points
Weekly Behavior: 10 points
Essays and Resume: 50 points
Quizzes: will vary

Your final exam will be worth 10% of your grade. This means you need to do your work during the semester, because the final will not be able to save you at the end.

The grading scale is as follows…
90% - 100%   - A
80% - 89%     - B
70% - 79%     - C
60% - 69%  - D
60% or Lower  - Fail

Late Work:
Make up work for assignments missed in class will be accepted until the following Tuesday. Essays that are late will drop one letter grade for every day they are not turned in.

Plagiarism:
Representing some one else work as your own will not be tolerated. If you are found to have plagiarized someone else’s work, or have allowed someone else to plagiarize your own work you will automatically fail the paper you have plagiarized. The matter will also be brought to the attention of the Upward Bound Professional Staff who will deal with the situation as they see fit.
