Looking Back – Lab Assistant
By Peter M. Johnson
I feel that I’m blessed because as
an Intern I had the opportunity to work with an essential part of the schools
infrastructure; it’s computer lab system. I oversaw the operation and maintenance
of a specific lab each morning. I got things started up in the morning
and along with my mentor I troubleshot all of the interesting things that
have a tendency to show up on the computers, occupancies ranging from hundreds
of mp3s to Britney Spears head as the cursor. Students, in a good number
of cases, are often more educated about their computers than the staff
who they are working with.
Starting things up in the morning my mentor
teacher and I are responsible for making sure the online attendance system
is working. If it isn’t we need to get the wheels in motion to get it fixed.
We try to be as proactive about fixing things as possible because teachers
will be sure to let you know if they are unhappy with the way that their
technology is working.
The attitude toward computers, that I have
observed, is when they work they are the most wonderful thing ever. When
they are having difficulties they market themselves to being thrown out
the window. A lot of times it’s our job to keep teachers at least remotely
happy with the system that they have. As the semester has gone on this
year I think that people have been satisfied with the service that we have
provided.
Going into a new district I think that I have
a lot to offer. I am fairly proficient in Novel network, which because
of its price is the typical network solution of a number of school systems.
I am proficient in a number of the programs that teachers often use with
students. I can also deal with hardware and operating system problems.
It is always good to have someone around who knows how to fix important
things. I think that my knowledge will be helpful in the future and I’m
thankful for the time that I have had to hone my computer skills.
