Jim Thorpe Train Ride
October 18, 2003
Town of Jim Thorpe as seen from high above at Flagstaff Park.  The station is the reddish brown building located above the sumac. The F3 engines are the orange and blue specks just below the bridge pier.
The passengers enjoying a nice view.  Among the group are Steve, Joe, Jerry, and Charlotte.
Keep your arms and heads inside the windows!  Unless it's for a nice photo from high atop Hometown Trestle! This steel trestle was built in 1931, consisting of 8 piers and 17 spans. It is 981 feet long and 161 feet high.
View of the Little Schuykill River from 161 feet up, between the engine and the front car, while the conductor wasn't looking.  From here the river flows to Tamaqua and then joins the main branch at Port Clinton.
DON'T LOOK DOWN!  There were a couple spots where the trestle's footbridge was missing.
Someone erected a sign saying "BECKY JUMP HERE" at a spot on the trestle that's at least 100 feet up.  It makes you wonder what made the sign painter so angry at Becky!
View of the engine from the front car of the train on the return trip.  Believe it or not, this car was unoccupied!
After the trip, the vintage F3's backed up past the station.
The pair of F3's ran very smoothly and were painted in colors that match the fall colors nicely.  The Jersey Central used this paint scheme in the early 50's, but then changed it to a dark olive green with yellow stripes.

Here in October 2003, the engines had to wait for traffic getting out of the parking lot.  By early afternoon, the town was one huge traffic jam.
