We got talking about Room 101 and you can see from his blog he�s written up stuff that�s on his list.
Personally speaking, my 5 picks are (IN ORDER):
1) Religion (incorporating�well shit loads of stuff. Where do I begin? The death of thousands of men in wars of religion, the death of thousands of women in �witch trials�, the millions of ruined lives as a result of religious guilt and sexual abuse at the hands of the clergy, the Magdalen laundries, the most intimate act of love being �sinful�, the thought that you have to assume a god to be a good person, street evangelists verbally abusing passers-by, oppression of other faiths, oppression of women, gays, etc, the demonization of teenage mothers, hellfire preaching, the fear factor (judgement awaits you), wasted Sunday mornings, picketed TV programme producers receiving death threats from �godly� people, fundamentalism, religious hijacking of public holidays and pagan festivals, the Troubles, global terrorism, the �War on Terror�, The Passion Of The Christ, gospel tracts, the fact that millions of people live their lives in accordance to the �good bits� of a book, Jesus I could be here for days�)
2) Society Conformity (incorporating celebrity culture, glossy trash mags, food/fitness/lifestyle fascism, narcissism, voluntary eating disorders brought on by society�s YOU�RE A FAT BASTARD stance, etc. Other examples of society conformity are brought on by the aforementioned when regular people in the street start living their lives in accordance to �what everybody else is doing�)
3) Humiliation (incorporating religious, sexual and (IN PARTICULAR) any hierarchical institution like schools, workplaces and the military where individuals are made to look stupid and foolish at the price of progress. Also includes humiliating initiation rituals like being de-bagged and shat on by soldiers/classmates/accounts department, bosses with no real aptitude for leadership who only got into the game to make peoples lives miserable, etc.)
4) Parental interference and �conditional love� (incorporating parents who would prefer to be seen as a success at society level at the expense of respect for their children. Conditional love is a real hatred of mine, not because my parents ever did that to me, but because my parents NEVER did it to me and I get on with them so much better as a result. My parents could have been absolutely hateful to me and my brother when we turned our backs on religion and education to do what WE wanted, but they weren�t. However there are millions out there who do. They would quite happily disown their children if they made their parents look in anyway unsuccessful; �WHAT WOULD THE NEIGHBOURS SAY??� sort of shite. Forcing kids to attend church, university or any shit they don�t want to do is WRONG because they are individuals and parents should have ABSOLUTELY NO SAY in what their kids do with their lives because everyone has the right to happiness.
5) Internet communities (incorporating the sale of shit you don�t need, making contact with people you hated at school who have found Jesus, the passing on of stupid mpegs, homemade pornography and chain e-mails. All this is seeming unimportant in comparison to the really harmful stuff that goes on on the internet. Organising jihads, sex and drug trafficking, myspace, etc.)
