I think it's important I get my social philosophy off my chest tonight because I've been thinking about it a lot recently. You see, it came to mind when I was watching Fight Club on BBC 2 the other night. I make no secret that it is my favourite film of all time, but it's not why you think.
"Pete's a guy, he probably likes the fighting, the explosions, the swearing and the knobbing". Not true. I like its anti-society aspect. I like the way it dismisses the rat race. It dismisses any idea of social heirarchy - "we are the all singing, all dancing crap of the Earth". We are not in any way special, or if we are, we're sure as hell not more special than anyone else.
We're born. We live. We die.
And we are subject to tauting and potential emotional torment if we don't do what Mr. Fashion and Mrs. Celebrity says or does.
I'm a firm believer that WE DON'T NEED THIS SHITE. And a firm believer that what we own does not decide who we are as individuals. We are in control of our own destiny. We don't need to assume a God. We do not need to look to the stars for guidance. We don't have to look to celebrites or therapists for all the answers. We need to look after ourselves.
Shitty magazines tell us everyday what to wear, what not to wear, what to eat, what not to eat, what to drive, what to listen to...AND A PLAGUE OF ABUSE AND MOCKERY ON ANYONE WHO DOES NOT LISTEN!
Today, society demands a level of conformity that I just cannot subscribe to. I don't want to be like everybody else. I want to be the arrogant, short-fused, geeky yet romantic revolutionary that I was born to be. And the only way I can get that is break away from society as a whole. I associate myself with the things that I want. This is why I rarely go out to "happening venues". This is why I'm not ashamed of my Renault 5. This is why I make no secret of my love for Science fiction or Car Ferries of the Irish Sea 1954-2006 (I'm not kidding). They are the things I like. If you don't like them, fair enough. Just don't take the piss. Because if you do, it's a wasted breath. I'm not going to listen.
This is why I get so cross with people who can't make a single decision for themselves. Who cares if people are going to rip on you for doing the things you want? Better that than doing the things you're not comfortable with, just to appease everyone else. They're going to take the piss whatever you do.
Who cares what the celebrites' dress sizes are? Who cares if they're partial to a piece of cake now and again? Who cares that they have Burkina Faso's debt deficit in their Swiss bank accounts and you don't? You're NEVER going to reach those heights. Unless you're jammy (like some bird called Chantelle Houghton). And who'd want them anyway? You'd just get followed around by sad act photographers and people who have got such inferiority complexes they watch for EVERY single blemish on your face.
Who the fuck is Chantelle Houghton, anyway? |
