It's (steel) early...
15 March 2004
Maybe it's the billions of tiny blue seats or the acres of exposed cement (Qualcomm anyone?) and steel, but Petco Park feels dark and cold to me. The WMS building's beautiful brick face doesn't fit, and too many seats offer obstructed views of the field. The upper deck suffers from being closer to the field without an increased grade (basic geometry, folks), and leg room has been sacrificed to angled seats and, well, in the name of 'community', I suppose.
We're talking multi-million dollar mistakes here. I'm certainly no architect, but given $400+ million to work with, I might have focused less on making my ballpark look like a pile of cardboard boxes on the outside, and more on the fan's perspective inside.
Look, we all know who's writing the checks around here: we are. I wrote one just a few months ago for a seat that I was assured had an unobstructed view of the game. I suppose the woman that I spoke to just assumed that the seats in front of me would be empty or occupied by the headless. They were neither over the weekend, but I'm told the Aztecs compare favorably to the Padres in fans with heads on their shoulders. And that's not saying much.
