Polymer Science Technology
The polymer science program at PHS is a 2-year vocational course designed to prepare students for careers in the polymer industry.  Our completers have gone on to study at major universities and community colleges or have taken jobs with local polymer companies.  Petal's program is the first high school program in the state of Mississippi and has been active for 10 years!
What We Learn
- Safety: home, lab, and chemical safety;
  workplace policies; government agencies
  that regulate safety

CAD: 40-day module using AutoCad LT
  and Pro Desktop; design 2-D and 3-D
  parts; basic blueprint reading

Polymer Chemistry: basics of bonds;
  polymer synthesis (condensation and
  addition polymerization)

Physical Properties of Polymers:
 
crystallinity; tacticity; phase separation;
  mixtures and solutions

Polymer Processing: injection
  molding;   extrusion; calendaring; dip 
  coating

School-to-Work: 2nd year students
  participate in job shadowing at the
  University of Southern Mississippi and
  local companies; teach a polymer unit to
  4th graders

Professional Development: computer
  skills; resume writing and interview skills;
  teamwork; employee expectations
