| MAINE APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NORTHBOUND MAINE ROUTE 4 TO MAINE ROUTE 27 This hike was a 32-mile traverse over the Appalachian Trail in the western mountains of Maine. This hike was the first of what became an annual work place tradition and is also considered by Death Hike Veterans to be the most demanding. High peaks and deep valleys made for long days on the trail. DATE: 5 - 7 October 1996 ATTENDEES: JPF, JRK, RDH, WAC, JB, AJB WEATHER: Absolutely Amazing. Perfect peak fall foliage weekend. Rime ice was present on Saddleback. Temperatures fell into the 20's F on Saturday Night 6 October 1996. MAJOR PEAKS: Saddleback Mountain 4,116', The Horn 4,023', Saddleback Junior 3,640', Poplar Ridge 3,120', Spaulding Mountain 3,968', North Crocker 4,168' CAMPING LOCATIONS: Day 1: Old Sandy River and Rangeley Lakes Railroad (SRRLR) narrow gauge railroad bed at Orbeton Stream.
