| MAINE APPALACHIAN TRAIL - SOUTHBOUND MAINE ROUTE TO MAINE ROUTE 27 This hike was a 38-mile traverse over the Appalachian Trail in the western mountains of Maine. The route starts by crossing the Kennebec River in the "ferry", (an Old Town canoe), manned by "The Ferryman", proceeds over low terrain to the Bigelow Range. The low terrain includes Carry Ponds. This area was crossed in 1775 by Benedict Arnold enroute to attack the British at Quebec City. The trail crosses the Bigelow Range to the trail head at Route 27 near Stratton. DATE: 1 - 3 October 1999 ATTENDEES: JPF, RDH, JH, WAC, AJB, MDK, Austin the Dog. WEATHER: Another great fall foliage weekend.. 50 mph gusts and wind driven drizzle on Avery Peak then clearing. MAJOR PEAKS: West Peak 4,150', Avery Peak 4,088', Little Bigelow 3,090', South Horn 3,831'. CAMPING LOCATIONS: Day 1: West Carry Pond Shelter. Day 2: Safford Notch. |
