| MAINE APPALACHIAN TRAIL - NORTHBOUND NH/ME BORDER TO MAINE ROUTE 26 This hike was a traverse over the Appalachian Trail in the western mountains of Maine. The route start in Shelburne, New Hampshire at the Austin Brook Trailhead. We picked up the Appalachian Trail at Gentian Pond and proceeded North. We crossed the border and traversed the Mahoosuc Range including the "Toughest Mile of the AT", Mahoosuc Notch. Mahoosuc Notch is a scramble through a notch filled with house-size boulders. The "trail" leads under, around and over the boulders for more than a mile. The toughest mile is follow by a 1,600 foot climb up Mahoosuc Arm. DATE: 20 - 22 October 2000 ATTENDEES: JPF, BAM, RDH, WAC, AJB, RG, Austin the Dog. WEATHER: Another great fall foliage weekend. Cold on the summit of Old Speck. 29 F and 40 mph gusts resulting in wind chill of about -15 F.. MAJOR PEAKS: Mount Success, NH 3,565', Mount Carlo 3,565' Goose Eye 3,870', North Peak 3,675', South Peak 3,395', Mahoosuc Arm 3,765', Old Speck 4,170'. CAMPING LOCATIONS: Day 1: Carlo Col Shelter.
