AVIAN INFLUENZA
What is Avian flu? Avian flu is an infection caused by H5N1 virus subtype of Influenza A virus. The infection is prevalent in birds of all kinds, and lethal to all kinds of birds except water fowls which carry the virus in their G.I. tract. The virus spreads from bird to bird by droplet infection. The virus spreads to human through close contact with infected birds and bird excreta or products (feathers...). The virus is not known to be able to spread from human to human.
What are the symptoms? The symptoms of Avian flu do not differ from ordinary influenza, but may be severe enough to cause life-threatening complications, especially in the young, the elderly and patients with co-morbidities such as old age, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, cardiac conditions ... 1. Sudden increase of body temperature above 38 ºC. 2. Problems with respiratory system (shortness of breath). 3. Fever. 4. Muscle pain. 5. Cough. 6. Congestion of throat.
What are the means of infection? 1. Direct contact with infected poultry. 2. Direct contact with surface and subjects contaminated with poultry faeces. (these two routes are presently considered as the main route of human infections) 3. Exposure during slaughtering, de-feathering, and preparation of poultry for cooking is considered. (there is no evidence that properly cooked poultry or eggs can be source of infection)
What are the safety instructions to follow? 1. Close contact between humans and wildlife have to be limited. 2. Poultry production must be separated from wild birds and wildlife market. 3. It is safe to eat poultry and poultry products, BUT good hygenic practice, proper handling and cooking must follow. 4. Make sure to clean the chicken well, and also the shells of chicken eggs. (if possible, use soap). 5. Boil your food (chicken…) at 56 ºC for 3 hours or at 60 ºC for 30 minutes. 6. Hard-boiled eggs are a better choice.
