The Kyoto protocol was started in 1997 by a coalition of countries who were part of the United Nations to control and prevent the production and use of greenhouse gas agents. The gases controlled by the purposed protocol are Carbon Dioxide, Methane, Nitrious Oxide, Hydro fluorocarbons, Perlfouorocarbons, and Sulphur Hexafluoride. The protocol prohibits and controls the sources of these gases such as waste disposal on land manure, and waste incineration. The countries who have been asked to partake in the protocol are industrialized countries that are on the line of becoming a second world nation. All these countries who have decided to be a part of the protocol have been given a quota which is a percentage of their annual output of greenhouse gases. By 2008-2012 the complying countries must have lowered their emission levels by five per cent. Allthough countries receive no arbitrary or monetary benefits they receive the satisfaction that they have given future generations a cleaner environment and fresh air to breathe. The reason the protocol has received so much attention in the media in recent months is the participation of the Unided States of Ameria. When the first draft was written in 1997, the United States was an active and willing participant. Now the U.S. has withdrawn their support for what they say are financial difficulties. According to a representative of the U.S., if they complied with the proposed cut to emissions, the government would lose 400 billion dollars annually. This figure seems to be yet another example of the United States fiscal priorities, as some countries do not even have a Gross Domestic Product (GPD) of 400 billion dollars. Maybe it's time for the United States to realize that without clean air, and a healthy environment, there will be no one left to trade with, or even goods to trade for..
