Who are these children with their wondering eyes?
Where are their mothers, their fathers, their God?
Do they know that Christ loves them--that He yearns
For their hands to grasp His heart with all of their
Callouses and all of their bruises? That He sent
Me and He sent you to share this with them?
Christ is their peace... their chance at Hope. God
Is their Father; He'll never walk out. Why do they
Suffer? To whom can we pass the blame for their
Sorrows, their tears, and their shame? I see in
Their faces the chaos inside. I've felt chaos, too;
I've been there--I know how to escape it, but
They have to listen with their hearts to find the
Comfort of release--only Jesus can open their souls
To His love, and I want to help any way I can.
Who are these children with their outstretched
Arms, calling to me to pick them up? Can I wipe
Away their tears and put salve on their scrapes?
Can I teach them to read, to listen, to sing? They
Know all the words, but the tune is all wrong.
Their violence, their fear, casts shadows over their
Angel faces, and all I can do sometimes is speak
Their names without anger tainting my voice, so
They know that at least one person doesn't
Hold it against them for breathing. If my love for
Them is this strong, how much greater is God's love?
Even I cannot fathom the depth of His passion for
These young hearts. They are bold. They are hard.
They are soft. They are scared. I am all of these
Things, too. Father, please help me to seek out Your
Peace, so that when they look in my eyes, they
Know I'm telling them the Truth. ~DBS 4/99

That's what the kids who live near Keith Vosler's "Hallelujah Faith Ministries" call his property, which is two slowly-being-fixed-up, huge old houses and a courtyard in between. For Spring Break '99, I and 10 other Crown College students worked at HFM, working with the neighborhood kids, spending time with them, teaching them, and loving them. I went to share God, and I was blessed by them greatly.
