Mitchell Road Elementary
Discipline Plan

SCHOOL WIDE RULES

1) I will come to school on time and be prepared to learn.
2) I will follow directions.
3) I will be responsible and make good choices.
4) I will respect myself and others.
5) I will take care of my school.

The school rules will be recited on "Mustang Minutes" (the school-wide news program) each day. At the beginning and throughout the year classroom teachers will discuss the meaning of these rules with students. Teachers are encouraged to assist students in brainstorming what each of these rules look like, sound like, etc.

CLASSROOM / GRADE LEVEL DISCIPLINE

Good classroom discipline is essential to a safe and productive environment. The administration, teachers, staff, parents, and students of Mitchell Road Elementary, must be committed to the principle that disorderly and disruptive conduct interferes with the rights of our students to learn. Our school and our classrooms should be safe and orderly places for students to learn. For these reasons disorderly and disruptive conduct will not be permitted.

School-wide rules are established that are clear, concise and consistently followed inside the classroom, throughout the grade level and school. The rules, the consequences for breaking these rules, and the rewards for following the rules will be similar in every classroom and school-wide. Rules, consequences, and rewards will be posted and reviewed with students often. Each member of the faculty and staff will be familiar with these rules, consequences, and rewards and should feel comfortable speaking to any student in our school.

DISORDERLY AND DISRUPTIVE CONDUCT

Breaking the rules will be separated into 3 infraction levels. The teacher will handle all level 1 infractions. Level 2 infractions will be handled by the teacher and by the Discipline Assistance Team (DAT). Level 3 (disciplinary referrals) will be handled by the administration.

LEVEL 1 DISCIPLINE

Teachers will discipline students choosing to commit Level 1 Infractions by implementing the school-wide card system (and using phone calls/notes home as needed). Each child will begin each day with a GREEN card showing. There are specific consequences associated with each change of a card:

GREEN - No offense has been committed.

LEVEL 2 INFRACTIONS / DISCIPLINE

The student is referred to the Discipline Assistance Team* (DAT).

Level 1 behavior that intensifies and is not resolved by the interventions carried out through Level 1 Discipline. (TEACHER MUST PRODUCE THREE (3) DATES and DOCUMENTED REASONS WHY A STUDENT REACHED A WHITE CARD)

DISCIPLINE ASSISTANCE TEAM

The (DAT) Discipline Assistance Team will be used to ensure that Mitchell Road Elementary is a nurturing and safe learning environment. The DAT is a group of concerned teachers and administrators whose primary focus is to maintain positive environment and work with parents, students, and teachers to develop a plan to improve student behavior. There will be two DAT groups, the Primary DAT (K-2) and the Intermediate DAT (3-5). Both groups will consist of the Assistant Principal or Principal, Grade Level Representative, and the Referring Teacher. Anytime a student receives a DAT referral the parents/guardians, student, and referring teacher must meet with the DAT (within the week). This meeting will be referred to as a D.A.T.E. (Discipline Assistance Team Effort). The purpose of this meeting is to develop a behavior contract specific to the child that will become a partnership with all members (student, parent, teacher, administrator) involved to nurture and ensure positive growth in the child's behavior.

BEHAVIOR CONTRACTS

The Discipline Assistance Team and the administration of Mitchell Road Elementary will be at liberty to use behavior contracts for our students. These contracts will set up behavior goals for students to achieve. Students who accomplish these goals will be entitled to weekly rewards. The contract will be set up between the student, teacher, parents/guardians, and administrators.

These infractions will receive automatic referrals to an administrator. Consequences may include removal from the classroom, in-school suspension, out of school suspension, parent conference, counseling, and/or other consequences as deemed appropriate.

POSITIVE REINFORCEMENT

CLASSROOM REWARDS

Teachers are encouraged to positively reinforce desired student behavior and conduct with positive reinforcement and rewards. Positive rewards to students may include:

Positive statements and compliments to reinforce proper behavior
 Money system

COMPLIMENT PARTIES

Each classroom teacher will develop his or her own system to keep track of counting class compliments to reward positive behavior. All adults are encouraged to compliment classes that are behaving nicely in their classrooms, hallways, or lunchroom. Each compliment counts as one compliment, unless given by an administrator. Such compliments will count as three. Each class will have the goal of earning 50 compliments. Once this goal is attained, it is the responsibility of the classroom teacher to let Mrs. Byrd know. She will announce this on the news show. The classroom teacher will then set up a "Compliment Party" and an administrator will attend to celebrate with the class earning these 50 compliments. It will be up to each classroom teacher or grade level to decide what to do during a "Compliment Party." It can be something as simple as lunch in the courtyard on a picnic blanket, a popcorn party, an ice cream party, extra recess, etc After a class earns a "Compliment Party" it will start over and begin trying to meet this goal again.

REWARD ASSEMBLIES

Twice a year our students will attend Recognition Celebrations assemblies to recognize/reward our students who stayed on green and yellow. Students are eligible to win prizes donated by area businesses. (Details to be determined)
