Korean War pilot: `We're not lily-white'

Over the past four years, representatives from pretty much every major college football program in the Southeast have paid a visit to Auburn University. They don't come looking epa consumer fact sheet for tips on offensive or defensive schemes. In fact, they often don't speak to a single AU coach. They want to know how Williams, who also heads up the campus Fellowship of Christian Athletes program at Auburn, manages to reach so many of the AU players. Williams said Thursday evening during an event at fact britian Landmark Church of Christ. "We've had them come in from all over the country. Because they've seen what God has done at Auburn University and they want it too." The results of Williams' work (he calls it "God' s work") with the Tigers is undeniable. Over the past year, as arrests have piled up at colleges across the country, no AU player has seen his name in the police blotter. Not one. Yet, this program is recruiting from the same pool of athletes as Alabama and Georgia. The Tide has endured 11 arrests in 18 months. The Bulldogs have had seven players arrested since December. If you stretch it past the last year, the numbers are even more surprising. Williams, though, is quick to point out that arrests are simply one type of problem that can affect a team. As other programs are figuring out, that's rather difficult. Even the chaplains who have visited Williams and studied how he handles the players are having trouble connecting with the majority of players. So, what gives Williams planet fact sheets an edge? "He's been there," Smith said. "He endured the problems like all of us face. He went through the rough stretches. He has credibility with players." Williams' past is well documented by now. He's talked often of how he became an angry young man when he was at Auburn and began drinking and smoking marijuana. His attitude eventually led to then-head coach Pat Dye deciding to kick Williams off the team. That was the wake-up call. Williams devoted his life to God, turned things around and never looked back, eventually graduating from Auburn and then seminary school and operating his own ministry before his math fact return to Auburn. It hasn't been all sunshine and roses for Williams since returning to his alma mater, however. On the same day the Tigers were wrapping up their unbeaten season, Williams was the focus of a scathing column in the New York Times, which questioned his role with the program. The column, written by AU alum Selena Roberts, told of Williams' ties to booster Bobby Lowder (Lowder donated $30,000 to Williams' ministry) and to several former athletic department officials, who food fact lists serve as board members on Williams' foundation. There's nothing else that matters to me." And for that reason, Williams can't say how long he plans to stay at Auburn. "This here is just a calling from God," Williams said. "You go where God sends you. If I'm here another 10 years, that will be fine. As long as I'm in the center of God's will, I'll be happy."
