Wimbledon 1 Liverpool 0, 1988. One of the greatest shocks in the history of the English FA Cup. The header which left Grobbelaar stranded and the penalty which Aldridge missed denied Liverpool a glorious league and cup double that season. For me, though, it was the beginning of an admiration for a team which played the fluid passing game as well as any continental side and yet compromised none of the resolute play and passion of the English. Their great reign as champions, both at home and in Europe, was then coming to an end. The recent episode of the club's history under Gérard Houllier from 1998 to 2004 promised and achieved much without obtaining the success that the fans craved - the club's 19th English championship. Now, the players and fans who have walked and weathered the difficult path in Houllier's final two seasons have to find their feet again. Rafael Benitez, the current manager, will seek to combine the talents of Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Harry Kewell, Xabi Alonso, and Dirk Kuyt. The past 2 seasons, when the Champions League and then the FA Cup were won, have laid a very solid foundation for long-term success. Walk on, Reds.
