| Your All Purpose Cross-Cultural Mind-Expanding Progressive Music Station | |||||||||||||||||||||
| This station is dedicated to the memory of the progressive art rock scene I experienced in Baltimore during the 70s and 80s, progressive rock radio stations like WCVT, the progressive rock sections at underground records stores like Chicks Legendary Records, and all the music I was exposed to because of them.
I wish to provide some way for new music fans to understand how different and more expansive the progressive art rock scene was then than it is today. I want to take you back to a time before progressive rock was considered an established music genre with rules and expected sounds back to a time when progressive rock meant freeform creativity and not sounding like anyone else but yourself. A time when quality and diversity were the respected hallmarks of progressive rock a time when you could not even go near progressive rock without having your mind and your musical horizons expanded. This station is also dedicated to seeking out wider verities of sound and higher standards of quality for the progressive art rock of today, hopefully giving musicians a window into a wider world of creative and artistic possibilities that they can use to expand upon todays more limited and stagnating progressive rock scene. Think of this station as an educational tool that points to examples of inspiration and creativity that hopefully will inspire modern musicians to be more inspired and creative. Many artists featured here are not considered part of wat is today thought of as "The Prog Genre." But they are shown here displaying surprising ability to blend classical, symphonic, jazz, folk, electronic and other interesting music forms into highly original artistic elevations of the art of rock, which as I recall was originally the whole point of progressive art rock. I also want to reawaken the memory of progressive art rock as having an infinite array of sounds and musical devices for a composer to draw upon from the entire history of music, from Bach to anything that might be currently happening in music today. I look for music that uses progressive initiative to convey a wide variety of emotions and atmospheres to the listener. Everything from peaceful symphonic landscapes to primal screams. But everything here is not meant to be taken seriously, as I also remember art rock as having a sense of humor. So some things may be thrown in for comic relief just to keep things from getting too heavy. And some tracks may be here for the novelty of making you exclaim That band did prog tracks?!!! One thing I will try to avoid on this station is playing a lot of things you can hear on other Live365 prog stations. When creating the program I checked the programs of the other prog stations to see what they were not playing so that I could avoid playing anything that is not in need of more exposure to the progressive art rock fans of today. Something I really dislike about other prog stations is the repetition of tracks that just about everyone has already heard and should be getting tired of by now. Its like every prog station I tune into is bound to play Lucky Man Roundabout and Carry On Wayward Son, which is kind of annoying for anyone who is listening for things theyve not been exposed to before. And that was really much of the reason I listened to progressive rock radio back in the day to be exposed to new things. You may expect this station to sound quite different from other prog stations. But if you keep an open mind you might make some interesting musical discoveries here. And hopefully, if nothing else, you will be entertained. P.S. Please pardon the surface noise on some of the tracks that were ripped from vinyl. Im producing this station on a shoestring budget, and it would cost me tens of thousands of dollars to replace my LP collection with CDs. Plus a lot of these tracks are not even available on CD. So please try to be tolerant of any surface noise. If you want you can chalk it up to atmosphere, as this is something progressive rock fans where very accustomed to 30 years ago before the advent of digital media. Home |
