- Felix Music Browser Prerequisites

About Felix:
Felix Music Browser
is inspired by the One Web MP3 Server
[
One Web MP3 Server Home]

Felix tested server installation:

MS - Windows 2000 Server SP4
MS - IIS 5
MS - SQL-2000 Server SP3a
MS - .NET 1.1

IIS WEB Server, MS-SQL Server and music files may be on several separate servers.
The most reasonable Microsoft platform for Felix is Small Business Server (SBS).
Later versions of any of the Microsoft Server products should work.

WEB Client Prerequisites:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6+
Windows Media Player 9+

(Changes in code to include MAC and Linux clients planned, but not available)

Can't / Maybe:

Felix WEB Server can not run on anything but Microsoft Windows platforms.
A port to other SQL servers is planned. The media files can be on any Windows readable server.

Felix Server can not run on Personal WEB server (Windows 95/98/ME). See One Web Server!

Felix Server can not run on Microsoft Jet Engine (Access). See One Web Server!

Felix Server can not run on Microsoft XP-Home; XP-Home has no WEB sever!

But Felix on XP-Home may work if IIS 5 is installed. See here.

No MS-SQL Server? The free MSDE (not tested) should* work fine.

MSDE download:

http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx?tabindex=0&tabid=1
or:
http://www.asp.net

or:
http://www.microsoft.com/sql/downloads/2000/sp3.asp

*
Automatic configuration of MSDE will be included in a later release.

*
To administer MSDE and install Felix the SQL Manager is for the time needed:
SQL Manager can be installed from the MS SQL Server 2000 Evaluation CD
that is available from Microsoft. Install only the Client Tools if using MSDE!
(The SQL Manager will not stop working after 120 days - only MS-SQL if installed)

Felix Music Browser
is inspired by the One Web MP3 server, but needs more support software. On Windows 95/98/ME and XP Home; Use One Web Server
  One Web MP3 Server
is a free ASP application that turns your MP3 collection into a website. Seek database is the free MS Jet engine (Access). See: Oneweb.co.uk

Felix Music Browser is inspired by, and contain ASP and JavaScript code from the One Web MP3 Server. Used ASP and JavaScript code contain all original copyright notes according to Open Source (GNU) program practice with comments/documentation on many/some(?) of the changes.
While the excellent One Web MP3 Server use file objects for browsing and MS-Jet for search, Felix is primarily SQL based for browsing and search. For complex collections of music files Felix's SQL based approach may be faster and have more options for organization and information.
For less complex collections, and for use on workstation platforms the One Web MP3 Server is the choice for most users. The browsing is intuitive and any change to the file structure is instantly available in the browser!
The One Web MP3 Server is totally WEB based for all functions like database creating for search and administration. This is excellent, but probably rather slow even for a few thousand MP3 files.
Felix is intended to be able to organize an unlimited number of all kinds of digital media files and related biographical and image information. This is a task normally seen by Public Libraries or large companies rather than the amateur collector. To make this possible with reasonable update times Felix administration is based on a Windows program (+ various helpers) for indexing and bulk update of the database. Database record search and editing is available as WEB forms for ease of use when upgrading record based information in the SQL, renaming music files or changing tag data.
Felix is based on several Open Source (GNU) programs used as is, or modified - And a lot of original code where needed. Functions are written in JavaScript, ASP (VB), .NET (VB and C#), CA Visual Objects (C), MS-SQL, DOS (32bit) etc., according to what was needed to accomplish within reasonable time with the fastest possible code.
Felix is not a traditional Portal application where every page must look the same. Web pages may be created with any (Microsoft compatible) tool and be presented in their original form. Images and text files may be added without any html formating - the objects will turn up automatically in the bowser.
