“It is always good to run in a group. When you do it alone, you give up easily especially when you are training for long runs.”
What better way to start “Featured Member” than our beloved Area Group Leader, Mr Phoon Yoke Heng, or simply call him Phoon. Born in Jinjang, Kuala Lumpur and later moved to Cheras, Phoon runs in Tasik Permaisuri almost everyday except Saturdays and Sundays. Pacesetter members usually gather at Bukit Aman on Sundays for their long runs.

Anyone who knows him would recognize him as the Vice President of Pacesetters Athletic Club Malaysia. The 44 year-old Construction Project Manager started running in Permaisuri since 1990. “At that time, this place was a mining pool. It has undergone massive construction makeover onto what it is today”, said the father of 3 children.

“Besides running, I do my cross-training with swimming. It is a good form of exercise and it improves my stamina,” said Phoon who clocks his training mileage of at least 40km per week.

Phoon, a believer of running in groups affirmed, “It is always good to run in a group. When you do it alone, you give up easily especially when you are training for long runs.”

“Well if you ask me what my best achievement in sports was, I don’t have much to say but every medal means a lot to me because it is an achievement for each run I take part. For example, I’m very happy with last year’s PJ Half Marathon because it was the first finishing medal which I obtained after so many years of running it.”

Phoon has ran 4 marathons and more than a “dozen” of half marathons. Having participated in four full marathons in different places, the Penang Bridge Run is Phoon’s favourite. “I love the Penang Bridge Run because it was then that I achieved my best time for the full marathon.”

Phoon does not plan to limit his runs to Malaysia only. His future plans would be to take his running hobby to overseas and hopefully around the world. Running is a good form of exercise which is not only good for health but also makes you feel good and the body looks great. Phoon shares that, “Running is a good way to relief stress”. Other than these common values that many would give, running has also made Phoon more discipline over the years.
“Running in a way reinforces the “culture” that is entrenched in every one of us. It has made me more time conscious. The fact that one could wake up early in the morning for long runs on Sundays is a testimony to this statement. Of course, making new friends and emerge oneself in the spirit of camaraderie is a bonus that keeps one running…”
