“Running is the panacea to weight problems regardless of gender or age. I know for sure it helped in reducing my uric acid level. Running is not too expensive and most importantly it helped me lead a healthy life,”

Kelvin Ng is no ordinary member in Permaisuri. No one who has been to Permaisuri have not “heard” of him before. The 43 year-old who hails from Pokok Assam, Taiping, picked jogging twenty years ago. His jovial self and bubbly antics make him stand out among Pacesetter members.

The large number of Pacesetter members in Permaisuri alone and the success of maintaining such a big group could also be attributed to Kelvin’s cheeky but friendly approach of drawing new members. Many joggers who are now members in Permaisuri agree that they were approached by Kelvin to join Pacesetters when he runs alongside “potential” members or when doing simple stretching.

Kelvin is happily married with three lovely daughters whom he fondly refers to as “Do-Re-Mi”. Fatherhood may have stretched him a little but that has not hamper his commitment to running in any way. His sacrifice to “Do-Re-Mi” as a father is obvious in him.

When asked, Kelvin said, “I started running in my 20s but stopped when I reached early 30s because I became a father. I was out of action for many years until things became more stable. I return to running in year 2000 and have not stopped since then.”

“I am not only into running but also cycling and swimming. I am happy at how my health life is shaping up as compared to previously when it was just work, work and family,” said Kelvin who is also a Technical Manager of a food equipment company. Kelvin is a self-confessed master-of-the-kitchen who could whip up a scrumptious meal within a respectable time frame. This is evident in him during most of our regular get-together.

Kelvin perceives running as more than a just a sport. “Running is the panacea to weight problems regardless of gender or age. I know for sure it helped in reducing my uric acid level. Running is not too expensive and most importantly it helped me lead a healthy life,” explained the marathon runner who has already conquered 7 full marathons.

A savvy traveler in many Asian countries, Kelvin said, “I really love Songkhla and its Marathon. The people are friendly and the organizers were great. We also get to go for a massage at Hat Yai after a tiring run.”

Kelvin does his short runs three times a week in Permaisuri and one long run on Sundays in Bukit Aman. On average, he clocks up to 30km mileage per week.

Even though Kelvin works in an environment that requires him to travel overseas, he has yet to participate in a running event that could fit into his schedule. However, he said, “I want to run a full marathon overseas. I was thinking of Bangkok or Hong Kong for a start.”

Kelvin could be spotted in other parks when he is involved in the Nike Test Run, which he is part of. Other than that, he is in Permaisuri most of the time. When asked about Permaisuri, Kelvin has this to say: “Permaisuri is strategically located. It is in a neighborhood next to my office and home. I like the facilities provided here. We’ve got a proper park with a huge lake. Parking is never a problem. This is a wonderful place to run.”
