“I have done an Ironman, 6 triathlons, and 5 Powerman.races. As for running events, I have completed 3 full marathons and countless numbers of half marathons…”

Ms Cherie Foong is Permaisuri’s “Iron Lady”. Being the first female participant who represented this area group to participate in last year’s Ironman Race in Langkawi, she is also nonetheless the most active female member in the group. Besides running, the 33 year-old is actively involved in multi-event sports like the biathlon, duathlon, and the half Ironman, This has in fact, put a lot of guys her age (or younger) to shame.

“I have done an Ironman, 6 triathlons, and 5 Powerman.races. As for running events, I have completed 3 full marathons and countless numbers of half marathons,” recalls the Manager of an insurance company after a short pause trying to recount them in order.

When asked about her best achievement in her entire sporting “career”, Cherie replied : “Oh! I won RM600 for the Powerman race. It was great! Reminiscent the Powerman, I had a great time as well as not so good ones. I still remember I was not well on the day of the Powerman. However I persisted and finished the race. I passed out upon reaching the finishing line!”
“It was tragic! I could still remember those who were around me giving me aides and so forth. Of course, the prize money came as a bonus”, said the Pudu girl who started running 2 years ago.

 Cycling at KL Triathlon 2003.
Cherie runs 50km per week, in which she devotes 3 days for running culminating a long run on weekends, 3 days of cycling and twice a week for swimming. Her social life is not at all scathed by the tight regime of training. Cherie is not all hardcore fanatics about sports herself. She is definitely not one who would qualify to be a species that has no life but bikes, goggles, running and more running.

“I have conquered Gunung Tahan and I do some wall climbing once in a while”, quipped the stout lady who also confessed to be a Taiwanese sausage lover.

There is a soft spot in her which makes her close to the group. Besides being a caring person, she is also very forthcoming with her help. Anyone in the group who register their run through Permaisuri, go through her. In last year’s Penang Bridge Run, Cherie took the liberty to accompany one of her good friends to run a full marathon even though it slowed her.

"My most memorable run would be the Penang Bridge Run 2003 because I managed to help Brandon (another member from Permaisuri) complete his full marathon. There two achievements made that day – one was that Brandon finished a full marathon and secondly I managed to be part of the achievement. It is indeed very enriching.”, said the Iron Lady as she gazed elsewhere reminiscing that day.

The extra mile that she takes just for the sake of the members is a tough act for many to follow. This is no wonder one of our members in the group has decided to marry her. Cherie who plans to settle down within a year has also decided to take things easy and to cut down on race competitions. Even though she now comes to run in Permaisuri on a periodic basis due to her new commitment, she is still very in touch with the group, especially our website. Try her and you’ll be surprised she has read this article before you!
