Here's a classic example of a site whose main asset - a heavy stand of trees - poses the principal design problem: how to bring enough daylight into the house while retaining as many trees as possible.
Clerestory windows, set above steeply pitched roofs supply the answer. This arrangement makes for a relatively constant quality of reflected light on both sunny and overcast days, while eliminating the skyglare problem that would have resulted if skylights had been used.
Interior treatment adds to the light, spacious feeling of the main living area at the rear. For example, white walls in the living room, dinning room and master bedroom rise to the steeply pitched ceiling. And glass walls with sliding doors open the entire area to larde decks and the woodland view.
In contrast to the open rear the front of the 2,840-sq-ft., hillside house is closed for privacy. Slit windows provide ligth for the kitchen, which is above one of the three additional bedrooms and below the library
