Jenny Greenteeth aka Peg Powler was a story told to children to keep them away from
the mill ponds and rivers. Go near the water and the evil water witch would
rise up grab your ankles and drag you under and hold you there until you drowned.
The Headless Woman
Travelling the country lanes around Longridge at night you could find yourself
walking next to what appears to be a dear old lady . Bonnetted and shawled
carrying her whicker basket on her arm. She will walk beside you as though
passing the time then turn to let you see her bonnet is empty. When you realise
there is nothing there her head will jump out of her basket and cackling and
screeching will chase you for miles.
