He had had a very difficult time fending off advances from the more determined ones. The only nurse he felt safe around was the nurse who was usually on duty at the front desk. She was all of fifty- three, married and was like a grandmother to every single member of the hospital staff. Now she called cheerily to him as he trudged wearily by. "Chiba-san!" "Yes?" The young doctor turned. He smiled faintly-the only kind of smile he had been known to show. For about the thirteen hundredth time, the nurse wondered why the young man never laughed. He was too stern, too serious, too cold. To be sure, Chiba-san was the dark, handsome, dangerous and brooding type that was supposed to exist only in the world of make-believe. He was, however, flesh and blood, and it was sobering to see a human being so emotionless. This was not to say that he was a bad doctor. If anything, he was one of the best and the nurse had it on good authority that Tokyo General Hospital intended to ask him to stay on permanently. "There is a message for you. A Furuhata Unazuki called about three hours ago. She wishes you to call her back as soon as possible." The kindly nurse handed the doctor a piece of paper. "She left her number." The nurse watched carefully as the doctor gave a cursory glance at the paper. Well, whoever Furuhata Unazuki was, she was not the man's girlfriend. Dr. Chiba's dark brows drew themselves together. He looked...puzzled and slightly worried. He shoved the paper into a pocket and then strode out quietly, head down, apparently deep in thought. Behind him, the middle-aged woman shook her head and sighed softly. "Chiba-san is far too lonely." (c)2001 Copyright original storyline, Alsepang
