The Old Salesman Compared to the New
Sales have been around for an uncountable amout of years. Thus the economy was made. Nothing in the world is free. So, everything muct have a price, and with that being said someone must sell the product. And that is where salesmen and woman come into the picture. It wasn't until many years later women actually were able to have jobs and since then many have gone into sales. When Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman was written, sales were done mostly by men, and their cars, going door to door to average people's homes trying to sell the latest trend or such. Women in this time were selling make-up. Willy Loman in the play was selling products to different companys, which is what my father does. Willy drove to companys to sell his product, and that is also what my father does. Like Willy he makes "cold calls" which are traveling to a company that you think can use one of your products and they stop in and try to talk to someone. My father also goes to trade shows, which have also been around for a long time. The thing that has changed the most since Willy's time is the advent of electronics. The Fax Machine being the first big thing, and now their is email. Where buyers and sellers no longer have to wait days or even minutes they can now have it in seconds. Sellers and buyers also have to respond immediatly instead of waiting weeks for a quote. C.A.D. files can now be sent electronicly with two or three dimensions. Having all of these new things that have come so quick have made business real competitive, and the seller really needs to know what they are doing, because there could be someone out there that knows more then them and the buyer could go with the that person.
