How today is like Orwell's 1984
George Orwell's 1984 was about a totalitarian country called Utopia run by a man called Big brother. Today, America is supposed to be a democracy run by the people. Everyday it seems the United States of America is becoming totalitarian. Things that happened in George Orwell's 1984 are happening today.
An example of this is how today our people are being lied to every day. Not only by the government, but also by the media. In 1984 the people were lied to about everything like; how the world was before Big Brother, and were brainwashed to believe things that weren't true. Today, the media tells us facts that aren't true, and are trying to get rid of of facts that are true. For example government agencies are requesting certain government reports to be removed from public libraries (SOS). Also, the government has been removing information from websites that do not agree with the current administrations policies (SOS). The government has a big role with what goes out from the media. If a ABC News reports something that the government did not okay, then the government will retaliate, by not letting that certain news come to press confrences or tell that news any big stories that they are going to release.
The government lies to it's people on a daily basis. For example, United States Intelligence agencies stated that Antrax attacks in the United States in October 2001 were from Iraq, which was later proven to be false (Common 1). Also, President Bush stated that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, when in fact there were no weapons. A picture was later shown of these supposed weapons of mass destruction which were only trailers holding balloon inflators (What).
