1984 was written by George Orwell in 1948. The book is about a country called Utopia which has taken over and is controlled completly by the state. The party tells the people to do everything. The run the people's lifes they tell them who to talk to, how to talk, what to wear, who to marry, and just about everything else. The state does various things to controll the people like by changing the English language so they could have more power over the people who spoke it. Newspeak was in charge of this they abolished any words that had no meaning or need to be used in their language. They also had the Thought Police which were controlled by the government and their duteis were to find anyone that was not for Big Brother and either kill them, torture them, or brainwash them until they believed in Big Brother. Big Brother, was the head of the statfe, he took charge and everyone was under his power. Also in the book everything the party told the people was a lie. They told people that the world is better now than it was back before they were in charge. Winston was the main character in the novel, and he worked for the government, but did not believe in the party and the way they ran things. He has a vague memory of what is life used to be like, but knows that it was much better than how it was now. He lept a journal in which was not allowed by the patry. The journal is where he kpt all of his secert thoughts about the party. Winston meets Julia where they become lovers. Which is not allowed by the party. They are both rebellious towards the party and break many rules. Winston knowing that what he is doing is wrong does not stop, because he knows he is bound to get caught and will die. Eventually Winson is caputered and is taken to Miniluv where he is tortured, degraded and humiliated. O'brien works with Winston, until Winston no longer feels the way he did about they party, and soon enough Winston loves Big Brother and has love for the party. Winston betrays Julia and himself. He realizes that he can't beat Big Brother, so he accepts his betrayal and lives on for Big Brother. |
