Jorge Luis Borges was born in Buenos Aires Aregentina on August 24, 1899. His father was named Jorge Guillermo Borges. He was a lawyer and also a psychology teacher. Jorge Luis's mother was named Leonor Acevedo de Borges, she descended from a family of soilders and freedom fighters. Borges loved both of his parents very much. He also had a sister named Norah who was his only childhood friend. As children they would turn books into plays, hang out at their summer home in Adrogue, and go to the zoo. Jorge Luis Borges was also a loner during his childhood and stayed indoors must of the time. But, became a friend with a local poet who was also his neighbor named Euaristo Carriego. Borges idoled this man. Borges started writing fanical stories when he was six years old. In 1908 he started going to school. There he was only taught about Argentine Nationalism. He was also picked on by the other students because of this English ways. In 1914 him and his family moved to Geneva, that was when the war broke out. He started to attend a school there called College Calvin where he started to make friends, and was introduced to symbolist literature. In 1919 his family once moved again to Lugeno he already had a degree and this is when he decided to be serious about writing. His family started to move a lot and they eventaully ended up back in Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires had changed a lot since the family had lived there and he decided this is where he would have new opportunities. He met one of his father's friends named macedorio Fernandez, this man helped him with his writing styles, and this is where Borges really bloomed and so did his fame. 1924 through 1933 were excellent years for Borges because he started to found many literary magazines and contribute many of his pieces to other magazines. During this time he also became very interested to politics. From here on he continued to write many pieces. This is also when he started to have trouble with his eyes. After endless operations he would eventually become blind. He died on June 14, 1986 at the age of 86. He died of liver cancer in Geneva. |
