My Chapter Review

Chapter 1

Chapter one describes how Ruchel Dwajra Zylska came to America and how she had to change her name to Rachel Deborah Shilsky at the age of 19. Rachel lived with both her parents Fishel Shilsky and her mother Hudis. This chapter is describing Rachel's childhood and how her parents treated her at that time. Rachel's father Fishel Shilsky was an orthodox Rabbi he escaped from the Russian's and the army and snuck over the police border and was arranged to marry Rachel's mom. He was a short dark hairy and gruff man. Hudis was gentle and meek. She was born in Poland and was paralyzed on her left side and
left her in overall poor health. Her hands were useless. This was a pretty good chapter because it tells the story of her parent's origin.

Chapter 5

Chapter five describes most of Rachel young life and how they had to move from pace to place because her father was a traveling preacher. He was just like any traveling preacher except he was a rabbi. He would go around preaching and singing like a cantor. At the middle of this chapter the father decides to stay in one place and own a store the store was a rickety old huge wooden structure that looked like it was held together with toothpicks and glue. The family worked hard in the store. Rachel experienced such thing like sexual harassment from her father he would molest her. I don't like Rachel's father because he made her do things she didn't want to do.

Chapter 9

The characters in this chapter is Tateh, France's, his father and the man with the turtle. France's is a girl that becamed a best friend to Ruth. She didn't cared if he was Jewish. The man with the turtle is a man that goes fishing and crabbing at the wharf and catch huge turtles and take them home to make soup or stew out of them. Before he went home he stopped at the grocery to buy ingredients for the stew. The turtle starts to kick and tris to run away, but the turtle coudn't managed it. At the beginning of the chapter Tateh would open his knife case and kill a cow. The first thing he would do is to make a prayer and plunge the knife into the cow's neck. The blood would drip to cows neck and from it's nose. So he went to a white school in Thomas Jefferson Elementary. Tateh would pay for private lessons instead of going to a school with gentiles. But the law was the law. so he haded to go to the white school. When he was in the fourth grade, a girl named France's camed up to her and said you have prettiest hair and could we be friends, and she said yeah. Then she would go to her house, and Frances would be sneaked in to her because her father don't like gentiles. Both of them would go to the grave yard and talk about anything. Later on for the fact that many people were poor, the man would go fishing or crabbing for huge turtles. They would go home and make soup or stew out of them. France's is a very nice girl, because she became friends with Ruth. Ruth was a very lonely girl that didnt had friends. France's changed her life. They did everything together, go to each other houses, eat dinner, talk about any problems they had, in this days its hard to find a friend like that. The man with the turtle has no feelings towards the animals. He just goes fishing for turtles just to kill them and eat them up. I think animals are lke human beings because the have feeling, legs, arms, and they also could die. But if a person is hungry and has to feed his family he should do the possible thing to give food to his family.

Chapter 21 is called ''A BIRD WHO FLIES''. This chapter is right before Ruth leaves back to New York, and they received a letter from one of the Aunt's saying that Ruth grandmother had just passed away. Ruth's father didn't tell her mother but he let Ruth read it to Mameh. Tateh Ruth father wants to get a divorce from Mameh and was using her against her. Ruth left back to New York and moved with Dennis to Harlem and started to work in a Glass Factory.
