Mother Courage and
her Children
HOME
Brecht completed Mother Courage in 1939, and still remains one of the most famous and effective anti-war play the world has ever seen. Brechts idea for the play arose when he was in exile in Scandinavia before the outbreak of the Second world War. He wrote it as a warning to those with an idea of making profit out of the war. The playlooks at the behaviour of ordinary people in a war situation.
'Mother Courage' is set at the time of the Thirty year war  (1618-48), in a hope to prevent audiences from having an emotional response. Brecht wanted behaviours and motives to be examined rather than specific events.
In 'mother Courage' we see the character
of Mother Courage struggling through the war,
come-what-may, making what she can out ofit,
and at the same time attempting to maintain the
well being of her family.
