Another balmy day in Stockhom.
In March 2001, Mandy had to attend a conference in Stockholm, so I decided to join her for a "Long weekend". We stayed at the Alexandra Hotel for the first part of our visit. The weather was cold and we had several snow storms.
While Mandy was at the conference I took the chance to visit the National Maritime Museum and the Kaknas Tower. The  Observation floor of the Tower gives some spectacular views of the city.
We also visited the very impressive Vasa Museum. A wonderfully preseved Swedish Warship that sunk in 1628.! The Vasa Museum is incredible and rightly the pride of Stockholm. This story is truly remarkable. In 1620 Warrior King Gustav II ordered the building of the biggest ever war ship.

However, the Vasa sailed no more than a few hundred yards before she toppled over and sank to the bottom of Stockholm harbour taking 50 men, women and children with her.


In 1956 Swedish marine archaeologist Anders Franzen found her lying in the mud. Because of the type of water and mud in the harbour she was in perfect condition and exactly 333 years after her short voyage, in 1961, she was floated back to the harbour and restoration began.
