The Taiping Customs office history of establishment is as old as the establishment and development of the Larut Matang district in general and the Taiping town specifically. Taiping is famous for its tin ore produce. Taiping was the first capital of the state of Perak, whereby later Ipoh became the capital of Perak and Taiping became a historic and the second biggest town in the state of Perak. HHistorically, Taiping cannot be distinguished from Port Weld, a small port known presently as Kuala Sepetang. Port Weld is famously known as a busy port historically, for its import export activities between Taiping and Penang. Port Weld apart from Teluk Anson ( now known as Teluk Intan )is also used as an exit point to the Kinta District and Upper Perak District. At that time, the import and export goods were opium, preserved vegetables, tobacco and tin ore. Port Weld's activities with Taiping became closer when the railroad was built. The railroad from Taiping to Port Weld was started to be built in the year 1884 by a team of Ceylon Pioneer Corps and on 1 February 1885, the railway service was officially opened by transporting passengers and cargo from Taiping to Port Weld. The first customs office was built at Port Weld and it was situated at the railways' wharf ( traces can still be found and presently it is a jetty ). In those days, most customs offices was built either at the entry points or borders. In the past, the best transportation was by sea or river and with the progress, the transportation system also changed and increased with the development of land transportation ( rail and road ) and the steady progress of industries in the inland areas. The tasks and responsibilities of the Customs Department was now not only confined to import and export activities. Inland Customs Offices were also built and the small office ( beside the Taiping Railway Station ) was known as the Royal Customs and Excise, North Perak, Taiping. Beginning December 1986 the North Perak Customs and Excise Department moved ( rented ) to the Wisma Perbandaran Taiping until mid 1993. With the increased economy and industries growth, especially at the Larut Matang & Selama, Krian and Kuala Kangsar district, the number of the department's staff also increased. To accommodate the growth, on Julai 1993, the Taiping Customs office once again moved to the its own building at JKR 2113, Jalan Assam Kumbang, Taiping. [Top] | Customs Stations | Perak Customs |
