Sydney's Journey with Osteosarcoma

 Peppi Schroeder

"Believe"
As I grieve alongside the moms and dads of two rotten ones (a girl named Rocket and a boy named Jake) who were lost to this horrible disease on 3-17-04 and 3-18-04. I wrote this, not only in memory of them and others who have gone before her, but in honor of those who are fighting for their lives (especially so many of the rottweilers onthe CBC list). This incorporates one single word that I've had to cling to, that helps me get through this horrible journey of osteosarcoma (bone cancer) with my rottie boy Sydney.

~~ BELIEVE ~~

When one starts this journey
Through life's cruelest jokes,
You feel helpless and hopeless
Your heart is just broke.

Frantically you search for answers
With all of your might
So that you and your dog
Can put up a good fight.

The first thing you learn
Is the mantra to repeat,
By day and by night,
And not accept defeat.

It is what it is.
You do all you can do.
Never give up, never give in,
You've just got to BELIEVE.

So many options to choose from
At least it's a start.
You find one. All that's left
Is to follow your heart.

It is what it is.
You do all you can do.
Never give up, never give in,
You've just got to BELIEVE.

Throughout this process
Of helping your dog live,
There's one thing to remember....
...You've just got to BELIEVE.

Like a roller coaster ride,
There will be ups and downs.
There will be a few smiles,
And plenty of frowns.

It is what it is.
You do all you can do.
Never give up, never give in,
You've just got to BELIEVE.

You pray that your dog
Can have the title most coveted,
Of Wonder or Miracle Dog
Bestowed on your beloved.

It is what it is.
You do all you can do.
Never give up, never give in,
You've just got to BELIEVE.

Alongside your dog
As hard as your fight goes,
Sometimes this long journey
Must come to a close.

We see that bright sparkle,
In our dog's eyes slowly dim,
We don't want this light
To ever end.

As the end draws near,
As we say our goodbyes,
You find yourself flooded
With tears in your eyes.

Your loving touch, your soothing voice
Telling them how much they are loved
Will carry your dog for all eternity
At Rainbow Bridge above.

As your beloved dog crosses over
To Rainbow Bridge, you see,
They are once again whole,
Running, playing and pain free.

Your tears will be replaced
By smiles & fond memories one day,
Of those silly antics
Your dog did at play.

Your dog will be with you.
Never to be apart.
You'll be together forever
In both spirit and in heart.

Your dog will be eternally thankful
You never gave up, never gave in
You did all that you could
No greater love has there been.

One day in the future,
You'll meet again, you see.
How do you know this?
You've just got to BELIEVE.

In memory of all our "kids" that have fought the fight of their lives with dignity, with spirit and most of all with unconditional love, even to the end
