Since my last post, Sydney's about the same except for being skunky. By the way, I tried that 3% hydrogen peroxide (1 qt), 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 tbsps of dishwashing liquid. According to the instructions, it was supposed to bubble up something fierce and it only bubbled up if I swished it quickly with my fingers to get it bubbly. Maybe I did something wrong, but followed the "recipe". Meanwhile, Syd has been doing the same except for smelling like eau de skunk!
9-14-03: It's been 10 days since his first chemo (doxorubicin) treatment along with two "P" pills (either piroxicam or a placebo) once a day. Syd has been doing well since my last report of 9/9/03. He is eating fairly well (not any more nor less than lately), is still getting around well, but stays fairly inactive. He hasn't gotten physically sick (no vomiting that I know of and he hasn't been nauseated that I can tell although once in awhile he will lick his lips a lot fast like he does when he has an upset stomach, but then it goes away). Last night, he did whine a little (the first in a week or so) in the night, but when I rubbed him as he lay beside the bed, he quit. He started up again around 1am and I did the same thing. Then he got up from the kind of lumpy dog bed (he chose that one, not me) and went to lay on the soft couch. He didn't start whining again until I got up to go to work and then he started whining a little. I checked him to make sure he was okay (which he appeared to be okay) and when I went downstairs to get my lunch packed, he whined a little and when I went to check on him, he had come downstairs and was lying on the floor in front of the basement steps (where my husband was at). So I think it's more of a "I want petted" type of whine. Not the mournful whine he had when he was recuperating from his surgery. He is also starting to lay on the side of his surgery but only if it's a soft dog bed or couch. He hasn't had anymore bloody noses yet. Drew a CBC for K-State (which will be done on the off week of chemo) so they can adjust any protocols for his next chemo treatment. Will have to get a copy of it since my vet drew the blood and was going to fax it to them Friday.
9-15-03: Overnight, Sydney started whining again a few times overnight. He seemed to be drooling slightly so I gave him a hollowed out hot dog with a little bit of Pepto Bismol in it along with a handful of oyster crackers. He seemed to just not be able to get comfortable as he was pushed off the dog bed by another dog and was wedged inbetween the side of the dog bed and the night stand so he didn't have any room to lay down. He did get up and go over and lay down on another larger dog bed and stayed asleep. I asked my oncologist about it and she said the time frame to worry about being nauseated is between 3-7 days after chemo treatment. She said I could pick up some anti-nausea meds when I came up for his next treatment on 9-17-03. 9-16-03: Syd is still eating well and getting well. His shoulder where he had his amputation seems to be getting skinny as I can really feel his shoulder blade. I hope that means he's losing some weight as that would help his remaining legs too. He still isn't very active, will hobble from one place to another, then lie down to rest. But hasn't run a whole lot like he did the night 'o the skunk. We're off to our 2nd round (of 5) chemo treatments early tomorrow morning. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers that he continues to do well with his chemo treatments.
