| After speaking with Dr. Modiano, I felt so hopeless and helpless. I just knew my Syd was going to die soon and there was nothing I could do, despite the information he provided me. I searched and searched the internet for any stories of amputation and osteosarcoma and I found a few, but in one case, the dog lived 4 months past amputation and the other died soon after diagnosis without amputation. I was devastated and could not stop crying over my Syd and all the other dogs that had to go through this. Someone on my rottweiler list had suggested a canine cancer support group on YahooGroups, so I went to check them out. There is a CanineCancer list (which is for those dogs with various types of cancer), then there is BoneCancerDogs list (for those dogs specifically with osteosarcoma). I joined the BoneCancerDogs list (or affectionately known as the BCD list) and began asking questions. The folks on this list are incredible. They have either gone through this horrible journey with OS or are presently going through it. They have so many dogs doing so many varied treatment options that I was bound to find someone who was going through the same exact scenario. They were patient with my frantic questions, my indecision on what was best for Syd and my second guessing before I finally made a decision. If you are reading this and want a great support group, please join one of these lists as they offer the knowledge, experience, caring and support you will need to help get you and your dog through this journey. It just helps to know that you are NOT alone. |
