| After the UTI (urinary tract infection) showed up in Syd last month, he's been on anti-biotics for 4-6 weeks. Once he got done, he needed to have another UA culture done. I just got the results back and my vet was confused, saying that the only thing they found was e-coli organism!!! He put him on cephalaxin for 10 days to see if it would start clearing up as I will be back up to K-State for his 3 month checkup on 1/29/04. I called and talked to the top oncologist at K-State and told her what the culture said. She told me that some dogs that have cancer sometimes keep getting recurrent UTI's and that Syd's e-coli is a common bacteria that can be commonly found in the dogs uninary tract. She agreed with his course of treatment. She also mentioned that her own personal dog had just been diagnosed with cancer (found out later it was not osteosarcoma) and that he has been showing recurrent signs of UTI and she is starting him on Deemos (SP?) which is something that binds to the bacteria to help clear it up. So this is something we might do for Syd. Of course she explained it, but I didn't understand it, so that's the best I can describe what she says it would do. She said the low concertration of urine might be the result of him drinking a lot of water. I told him Syd has always drank a lot of water, so that's nothing unusual for him. So I guess we'll wait and see what the next checkup appointment brings! Stay tuned for Syd news! |
