Direction: North Color: brown, green Elemental: gnome Animals: wolf, brown bear Earth and the north is the place of wisdom. The north is midnight, dirt, and forest. It is all the animals, but especially wolf and brown bear. It is the rocks, and the caves. This is the place of teachers and ascended masters. This is where guides dwell. Here you can invoke Jesus, Buddha, Kuan-Yin, or any great teacher you wish to ask for guidance. Here you can call in your power animals and totems. North is the place of the mysteries. In the wheel of the year, it is winter. It is the pregnant blackness, waiting to be uncovered. Here is the place of silence. Of great secrets and knowledge. North people are teachers. They know wisdom, and they pass it on to others. They are often very steady people who like routine. They are earth people. Family is often important to them, like the bear and the wolf, and so is the den: the home. But teaching is their most important attribute.

Witches work with the four elements very closely in all that we do. When we cast circle, we call them in, to guard and guide us, to be the watchtowers and keep us safe.
There are four elements: air, fire, water, and earth, and each of these has a direction, and certain attributes and elementals are ascribed to each one. In the medicine wheel (that is the circle) each of us is born towards a direction, thus aquiring the characteristics of that element. Cast a circle and invoke the elements and the Goddess and God. Walk around the edge of the circle, and just let your feet go. You will feel drawn to a certain spot, or perhaps your feet just want to stop somewhere. Let them. Take note of where you have ended up. This is the direction you are born into. Each of us is born to a direction and an element, but to lead a balanced life, we must work to become in the center as well as we can, and this means trying to balance out some of our direction's characteristics with its oposite's. For instance, if you are born in the west (water), try to balance some of your attributes with the east (wind) to become more balanced.
Air
Direction: East Color: yellow Elemental: sylph Animal: the birds Air and the east is about new beginnings. East is the dawn, and the rising sun. Wind makes things happen. Air is our breath and life. East people are very energetic, and always starting new projects, and overflowing with ideas. They often are leaders, and often leave others spinning in their wake. East people are like the birds: always flying high. They are the beginners.
Fire
Direction: South Color: red Elemental: salamander Animals: fire dragon, lion Fire and the south is about change. South is the sun at noon, the heat, the flames. Fire burns away that which we no longer need, and purifies us. Fire is the golden lion of courage. Attributes of fire are: change, strength, passion, will-power, courage, creativity, determination, transformer. South is also the summer, on the medicine wheel, where east was the spring and the dawn. South is the fullness time. South people are changers. They make things transform. Where east people begin them, south transforms them and makes them happen. South people are also initiators: of change and adventure. They are highly passionate and creative, and courageous. They are often into the fullness of life, perhaps materialism, and the very richest life has to offer.

Water
Direction: West Color: blue Elemental: undine Animals: fish, sea serpents, snake, black bear Water and the west is about healing. West is the twilight, the time of the moon, and the waves. Water is peace, and rest, and healing. When you need comfort and gentle love, look to the west. The water and the moon are closely connected. Where east is a very masculine direction, west is a very feminine one. Water is emotions. West people are healers. Many often grow up to become doctors or physicians. But healing takes place on more levels than one. West people are often good listeners, and can be counted to lean on if you ever need a gentle friend. Often, they make others feel better just by being near them, and they can have a peaceful, calming fealing about them. West people often go very deep, and usually know their very cores. The dangerous thing about this, is that sometimes they get stuck too deep, and fall into depression. East can help them out again. But going deep enough to know yourself is a good thing.
