Silver Chapter 1
"Penelope Hutton
Silver felt her stomach lurch. That was her real name; she knew shed have to go eventually but she couldnt help feeling perfectly terrified. She walked to the far end of the Great Hall, her knees shaking. Shed only heard bad thingsabout the sorting ceremony before. Of coarse all the things (like it being really painful or being some kind of difficult test) had seemed funny back at home, but on her way across the room with hundreds of eyes following her it didnt seem even remotely funny.
She sat on the tiny stool and the sorting hat was placed on her head. She shot a nervous look at Dumbledore. It was because of him that she had even been allowed into Hogwarts, he obviously didnt mind her condition, but what about the other people here? The thought hadnt come to her before now. Would any one else accept her? Would anyone find out?
Hmmm
She jumped as she heard the hat talk on top of her head.
Lets see fairly loyal---maybe Hufflepuff? Not very patient though. Cool in a tough situation Gryffindor perhaps?
Oh yes! Please!
The hat paused for what seemed like years and then
Gryffindor!
Relief flooded through her and she felt incredibly light as she stood up from the stool. There was a round of applause from the students at the Gryffindor table as she crossed to it, grinning widely both happy to be in Gryffindor and because she had found out that the sorting didnt hurt after all.
After the last of the first years had been sorted was the feast. It was the best food shed ever tasted, or at least thats what it seemed like to her as she dug into the most delicious pumpkin shed had in a very long time. Filled with relief and the victorious feeling of being sorted into Gryffindor she couldnt have been more content.
The feast lasted hours and Silver was among the last students to leave. She followed the other Gryffindors because she didnt know where their common room was yet. She was so sleepy that she didnt pay any attention as they gave the portrait guarding the Gryffindor tower the password-she could worry about that tomorrow.
She stood over her bed trying to figure out how she had gotten to it and finally came to the conclusion that she must have followed the other girls there while she was half asleep. Then she curled up, still in her robes, and fell right to sleep. For now she felt like she fit in perfectly.
Silver snippet 1
How can anyone make something as ordinary as reading look so beautiful? If only hed look up, his eyes are such a pretty color. Hes so nice, so good looking its amazing he doesnt have a girlfriend. I wonder
SILVER!!!
WA!? Who, what? Ouch!
I blinked and looked around suddenly aware of how sore my elbows were from leaning on them so long.
Silver concentrate, you have an essay to write remember!
Essay? For who, what about?
Potions!
Oh! That one for Mr. Whats-his-name, I remember!
I looked down at the book laid down in front of me, knowing Feather was glaring at me. She hated how I always forgot the teachers names.
Who were you looking at anyway?
Feather was grinning in her evil Slytherin way.
N-No one,
I felt my cheeks burn. Please not now, dont go red!
I know who it was!
I jumped and turned to see Squeaky sitting to the left of me. How long had she been there?
It was Remus!
My heart was pounding now. Howd she know? Knowing her she would have told the whole school by now. I wont be able to show my face around him again! What if he gets teased because of me?
Yuck! You like Sick-Boy?
No!
I sounded so unconvincing that I accidentally laughed.
Whats so funny? asked Feather, the look on her face told me shes been disappointed by my answer. She must have expected me to break down and tell them. NO WAY!
Why would I be staring at Sick-Boy?
I twitched, I hated calling him that.
I mean, he looks like a good hex would finish him off. Besides I have a really big crush on someone else and theres no way Im gonna tell you who.
I smiled confidently. There was no way they were going to get me to tell if the person didnt even exist.
Wow!
Squeaks ran off, most likely to go spread the new rumors about me. Shes such a typical Hufflepuff.
Few, saved! Now to finish that essay. Lets see I have 15 minutes to finish SIX MORE ROLLS OF PARCHMENT! O.o
Silver Chapter 2
Darn, I cant remember where my next class is! I think it was the second floor, let me check
The dungeon, wheres that? Oh well I guess all I have to is find some other Gryffindors
Scuse me, can you tell me Hey! I know you heard me.
Can you help darn 4th year girls. Few theres a bunch of 1st years. Now, who to ask Hey theres that cute guy I saw during the sorting. What was his name, I think it began with an R? Randy, Ronald, no R and then E, Remus! Thats it! I might as well ask him.
Excuse me, Aargh! Whyd he have to actually hear me?
Yes? Dont go red now, darn stop going red!
D-d-d-you know where the dungeon is. Potions is meant to be there but I have no idea where to look.
I think I know, want to come with me?
I think I lost my ability to speak, so I guess Ill just nod.
Aaa-finally here! Im both relieved and disappointed. I hope no one notices I came with him.
Well potions went smoothly. Now for some food^^!
You were late, Penelope.
Oh no a Slytherin girl. Hey, how does she know my name?
Have a boy-friend already do you?"
Oh come on I only walked to class with him and its only my first day here.
And hes the sickly boy to, Ill never understand Gryffindors
Few she left. What have I gotten myself into already.
Chapter 3
Day 2:
I found out her name, the girl who was teasing me yesterday. Its Darlene Frago. Shes mean to everyone! Well, maybe not everyone. Theres this one guy (Snape I think his name is) she seems almost nice around. Its really weird cause no one else is nice to him, even his fellow Slytherins. I do feel sorry for him sometimes though; Remus friends James and Sirius pick on him a lot. Im glad Remus doesnt join in. Apart from around Snape anyway, Frago is mean. She seems pretty popular among the Slytherins even though shes mean to them all. Their kind of leader Lucius Malfoy seems to have quite a liking for her. I almost feel sorry for him, shes cold as ice.
Remus is calling me now; were going to the library to find some information for our essays McGonagall is having us each write on animagi
Day 3:
A funny thing happened today. Rebecca (wait she asked us to call her Squeaky) Squeaks found a dog just outside of the main doors. He (I think it was a he anyway) was a huge black one, Im not sure what breed. Squeaky was all over him. I had no idea she was such a dog lover. She kept petting him and he was licking her all over her face (yuck), I dont mind dog slobber but this was seriously too much.
Anyway she was playing with the dog for a long time and for some reason as we were watching Remus started laughing ^^! Its good to see him looking so happy but I dont understand why
Random Snippet two:
See ya Remus!
Bye Penny!
Oh great, its Frago.
Penny now is it?
Its just what my parents call me
"Yeah, that and Cuddly-wuddly-buhbuh-kins.
No, That will be your parents.
Chapter 4
Today was brilliant^^! I actually enjoyed potions; well it did help when I found out we where to have the same partners for the rest of the school year. I would to the happy dance now but the other Gryff. girls are trying to sleep. Anyway the reason Im so happy is that Remus is my partner^^! (Plays annoying CELEBRATE; CELEBRATE DANCE TO THE MUSIC song in the background). Oh, yeah and the lesson was great today too. We were making potions that change your eye color! Remus looked so good with blue eyesOh well, I suppose I would have been saying that no matter what color his eyes were ^_^.
I heard that someone did a silencing charm on Squeaky today. I dont really care she probably disserved it- the little chatter-box. Shes nice most of the time but sometimes she talks so much I get this un-characteristic urge to punch her.
I met Remus friends today. Theyre all really nice (well most of them), especially Lily. She was one of the few people to actually get their feather to float today in charms (I was too^^!). One of Remus friend, James, acts all confident all the time, extra so around Lily (Oooo, I think someone has a major crush^^). His other friends that I met were Sirius and Peter. Sirius was tall and handsome with perfect black hair and a funny laugh, I couldnt help liking him. Peter on the other hand was short and rather annoying, always seemed nervous. How was he ever sorted into Gryffindor?!?
I cant wait for tomorrow! Everything is going so well, I wander when the next full moon is I really hope its not soon.
Chapter 5
Great, I checked my moon chart last night. The next full moon is tonight! I hate it but I guess I'm lucky I checked, don't want to end up wrecking the girls dorms. I feel tired already thinking about all the sleep I'm about to lose.
Todays classes are going by slowly, yet at the same time it feels like they're flashing by. As much as I just want to go to bed, I feel like each time a class ends I'm closer to the end of the day.
Remus doesn't seem very well today either. In fact he looks like I feel, tired and unhappy.
Dinner is over. Time to head up to the dormitories, at least for the other girls. I grabbed the note from Professor Dumbledore and re-read it on my way up the grand staircase. It had the directions to an unused classroom for me to go to during the full moon. I looked up. It could look a little friendlier I thought as I saw the room for the first time. It was large, cold and empty with numerous locks on the door. I did up the locks and put a silencing charm on the door and the walls surrounding. Now to wait, my least favorite part (apart from the whole transformation thing). I wish I could just read a book or something, but when I tried last time the book kinda got mutilated. I froze, right when I had looked up out of the tiny window the moon had finished rising. I let out a small scream as I felt hundreds of tiny grey hairs sprout all over me. My legs where cracking and twisting as my joints repositioned themselves. I to let out a moan when my usually slightly painful knees became suddenly unbearable, but only heard a yelp. After what felt like hours of torture I looked up. My grey, flexible ears twisted in every direction trying to pick up any sound but none came. I struggled to fight my new wolfs instincts but I began to growl and run at the door I'm glad I put that silencing charm on the door. I scratched and the wood splintered slightly but held. I managed to stop myself after a while, and managed to lie down, but having to constantly fight the urge to attack the door it was impossible to get any sleep. Eventually I got too tired to resist and the wolf in me growled, yelped and howled as it pleased and my mind slowly lost control of it.
Argh, who turned that light on? Oh wait it's the sun. I feel terrible, I'd go get some food (I'm starving) but right now I'm too tired to move. After dozing a little while I fixed my cloths (they had been completely crumpled and slightly ripped) with the tiny sewing kit I carried with me and a few different forms of reparo and set off for breakfast. One more full moon tackled and an infinite more to go, oh goody...
Chapter 6 so far
I'm so tired today! I can hardly pay attention in even my favorite classes. It's lunch, I'm almost too tired to eat and I don't really feel like talking, Remus doesn't really seem to either. At least charms are next, it's pretty simple and it's meant to be a good subject today. Where's Sirius? Oh, there he is, he's talking to someone. Rebecca!!!!! Interesting... Oh it's time for charms. Remus and I head for Charms. Professor Flitwick just announced we're doing Cheering Charms today. I hope they work, I could use a little cheering right now. The class divides into pairs and Prof. Flitwick tells us the incantation. I smiled grimly, held my wand up to Remus and said them. He suddenly looked cheerful as if someone had just said a particularly good joke. I raised an eyebrow, slightly nervous. We switched places. I grinned as a strange happiness filled me. Suddenly the tiniest things seemed hilarious. Remus was laughed quietly at the look on my face. Just trying to imagine it made me laugh. The rest of the day went incredibly well. Even though the cheering charm did wear off eventually, the memory of the odd stuff I found funny tickled me for the rest of my classes. When I finally went to bed I quickly fell asleep, pleased that the next full moon wasn't for a whole month.
Chapter 7
Ok thats enough James why dont you leave him alone for now.
No way, Severus was asking for it this time-
No he wasnt he was minding his own business-
Ouch, whatd you do that for Pen?!
It wasnt me!
Back off Potter, leave Severus alone! Darlene stepped in between Snape and James, pointing her wand furiously at James chest.
Darlene, stop theres no need to fight, James was about to stop, RIGHT JAMES?
I jabbed him with my elbow.
Right,
Having to tell your own friends off now?! Pity, Im sure if you chose moreintelligent friends theyd know how to judge a situation for themselves, rather than turn to you like a foolish child to its mother.
Do you have a problem with my friends? I felt anger burn in me. So what if James and Sirius like picking on Severus, its not like shes his mother.
Yes, as a matter of fact I do. What are you going to do about it Gryffindork?
Youre asking for it bird-brain Her eyes widened suddenly. How could that pitiful insult have actually bothered her? I dodged as she sent a spell soaring past my head.
Expeliarmus! Her wand shot out of her hand and was caught by James. I held my hand out angrily and he handed it back.
Here, I held out my hand to help her up, and when she didnt take it I pulled her to her feet anyway.
Take your Severus and your wand I hand it back to her- and go. Theres no use fighting, youre out numbered two to one. Meet me at the dueling club tomorrow. Its Saturday and we have no classes so be there early. There we can settle our differences in an even match that wont get us expelled She nodded solemnly, than an evil grin appeared on her face.
Tomorrow than,
Whyd you have to make it so obvious? Its not like no ones going to notice all the other girls going the same way except you!
Come on, I do my best, I mean for all they know I could be going to the bathroom or something-
Since when, was there a bathroom in this direction?
Penelope looked down. She always tried so hard not to let anyone notice. She didnt want anyone to find out just as much as Rebecca did and more. Rebecca didnt know how it felt, to not be able to trust anyone for fear of being discovered. She didnt know what it was like going through a painful transformation every month, losing sleep and fight to gain control of your own body. She never had to live with the fear of having to watch, helpless as she killed her loved ones.
Just go, the moonll be rising soon, her voice quivered as she tried to hold back her anger, thankful she was the only one sitting down so that Rebecca wouldnt be able to see any if tears came.
Fine, I dont want to watch anyway. Just stop being so obvious or Im going to have to tell your mom that you're not being careful
No! Dont write her, shell make me come home! Please dont, I want to stay here! She began crying openly now.
Rebecca turned to go but they both jumped as the door flung open.
Ah, so this is where you run off too. Darlene Frago stood in the doorway examining the room, her usual superior look on her face.
Go away, youre the last person I want to see right now! Penelope yelled, furious, ignoring her tears.
Crying like a baby, and I thought you were a Gryffindor.
Rebecca was shooting nervous looks out the window.
Just go Frago, theres no reason for you to be here. She said in a would-be-calm voice.
Both acting out of place, heres a Hufflepuff acting brave! Now Ive seen everything.
Both of you go, I dont need you, I dont need anybody and its not like anyone wants me so just go! Darlene looked down at Penelope, ready to throw one of her usual insults, but none came. She turned to go but spun around again as she heard Penelope gasp behind her. She saw Rebeccas eyes widen as she saw the full moon shinning innocently through the window and then run and close the door, slamming its many locks shut. Rebecca leaned forward and suddenly began to change, with in seconds where she had once stood was a noble hippogriff, wings spread and eyes wide.
Howd you? She was cut off by a loud noise from Penelope, a mixture of a scream and a howl that made Darlenes skin crawl.
Unlike Rebeccas quick and smooth transformation, Penelopes was taking quite some time.
Darlene watched in horror as Penelope writhed in pain, thousands of grey hairs sprouting all over her body. She tried to go over to her but Rebecca planted herself firmly between them. She finally tore her eyes away from Rebeccas razor beak as she heard the strange squirming sound of Penelopes joints shifting. Seconds later there was a fully formed wolf standing in front of her. She was suddenly grateful to Rebecca for protecting her. She looked in awe at Penelopes new coat, thick and grey; it caught the light of the moon making it shimmer like silk. She would have touched it save for Penelopes newly formed teeth and claws, both so sharp they made Rebeccas beak look quite blunt. She gasped as her brown eyes narrowed dangerously as she leapt towards her. Darlene screamed but Rebecca stood in front of Penelope, rearing with her wings spread and claws forward. Darlene took this opportunity to start her own transformation, into the form of a crow. She shut her eyes in concentration. She was still new to it so her it took a long time, but panic rushed her. As soon as she could she flew to the window sill and stayed there as Rebecca protected her from Penelopes many attacks.
Eventually the fighting ceased as Penelope slowly began to gain control. Every once and a while the wolf in her would take over again and Penelope would again gain control this continued for hours until the moon finally disappeared into the horizon and Penelope slowly began to turn back. Rebecca leaned back and then slumped against the wall as a human. Finally feeling safe, Darlene glided down from the sill and turned back to a human. They sat in silence, waiting for Penelope to stir. When she finally did, they all just looked at each other, searching for words. Never before had any of them learnt so many deep secrets in such a short time. They were bound now, bound by their secrets. Not one of them could betray the other, for each knew too much about the other.
Penelope smiled weakly.
So, whos hungry?
Chapter 9
We headed back to our separate dormitories. Any other day I would have watched Feather go to see where the Slytherin common-room is. Today Ive just got too much on my mind. My biggest secret was just revealed to my worst enemy, yet I found out her biggest secret so were even. Now I can force her to be my friend (evil grin)! Im in my dorm now. Its so quiet, Im hungry but breakfast isnt made yet and worst of all Im hyper and dont know what to do with myself! I lie down and try to go to sleep than take out a book and start reading.
Hey stop, whos shaking me. Oh, its just Lily, what time is it? Ah! Im late for breakfast. I thank Lily as we run to the great hall. As I eat breakfast I look over to the Slytherin table, Feather seems to be avoiding looking in my direction. I look over to the Hufflepuff table; at first I dont see Squeaky in her usual spot. After looking again I notice shes there she just fell asleep leaning on the table, (I laugh quietly) I notice her face is in her cereal.
What are you looking at?
I jump, oh its just Remus.
Look, (I point at the Hufflepuff table) see that girl asleep in her food?
Yes he said slowly, not seeing how this could relate to anything except my usual annoying silliness in the morning.
Shes my sister.
Now he too laughed quietly.
Chapter 10
Its the weekend so after breakfast we headed outside. The weather was warm and sunny with a cool breeze. I say good bye to Remus and start looking for Feather. I just cant wait to ruin her day^^! I find her sitting under a blue-ish pine tree with Severus. Theyre looking through a book labeled Dark Arts and How to Use Them They found that in the library? I walk up to her.
Hi Darlene! Hows your morning?
You know her?
Severus said without looking up.
Never seen her before in my life.
Thats not true Feather.
Whatd she call you?
Nothing, (She turned to me, hate burning in her eyes) youre asking for it Gryffindork.
Asking for what bird-brain?
Errr, you know I hate it when you call me that!
How would she if youve never seen her before in your life?
Not now Severus, this argument is getting personal.
So you dont trust me?
No thats not what Im saying at all! (She says this softly than her voice is hard and angry as she says) YOU! This is entirely your fault Gryffindork!
Are you mad? I ask innocently. She just stands there with a look of hatred in its pure form on her face.
Guess so.
WHY YOU INSOLENT LITTLE I CHALLENGE YOU TO A DUEL!!!!!
Ok,
SO? DO YOU ACCEPT OR NOT?
Yep^^!
Ok! Today after lunch and you had better not be late!
Ok, bye.
Who was that? I heard Severus ask as I skipped away.
No one, Feathers voice was a growl. I looked back to see her angrily turn back to her book. My work here is done.
Chapter 11
Cheers rang out from both sides of the room as Silver and Feather walked up the stairs opposite one another to the dueling platform. The Gryffindors and Slytherins had nearly all turned up for the match; Gryffindors wanting to see Feather beat after Silver lost the last match, and Slytherins wanting to see Feather again prove Slytherins superiority when it comes to dueling. There were also people from the other two houses who just wanted to see a good duel.
They stepped towards each other and stopped face to face. Feather noticed that Silver was now completely serious. I guess she wanted a rematch. They bowed to the audience and then to each other and fell into a dueling stance. Silver moved first.
Petrificus Totalis!
This move would normally have given her a huge advantage but she missed, the spell hissed loudly as it hit the stone wall.
Dont let it bother you Silver, you can do it!
Silver looked up as she heard Remus voice and saw him standing with James, Sirius and Squeaky in amongst the clump of Gryffindors. She straitened her shoulders, ready for Feather to move.
Serpensortia!
A snake flew from Feathers wand but, seeming completely uninterested in Silver; it slithered away into the crowd of spectators causing several people to scream before a teacher quickly disposed of it.
Rictusempra! Silver yelled but again missed. She ground her teeth, concentrating.
Come on Feather! Feather heard Severus call. Anyone else who called her by her nick-name would have gotten themselves into huge trouble, but from him she almost liked it.
Petrificus Totalis!
Feather tried to use the same spell that Silver had just cast against her but failed miserably. Silver dodged the spell and immediately cast Rictusempra. For a second it seemed everyone held there breathe, would Silvers last spell actually hit?
Feather raised her wand.
Prote---!
She was cut off as Silvers Rictusempra struck. Feather doubled over in laughter as cheers from the Gryffindors filled the stadium, drowning out any complaints from the Slytherins. Silver looked over to where her friends where sitting. James and Remus clapped a high-five, both grinning, and Sirius and Squeaky hugged before quickly letting go and clapping along with everyone else, now slightly red-faced.
After one of the teachers stopped her giggling, Feather headed over to Severus.
I lost. She said bitterly.
But not without a fight, He answered.
And theres always a next time.
Yeah, I guess so they headed back to the Slytherin common room.
Silver Chapter 12
The students were all gathered around the house tables in the Great Hall for lunch. I looked around to try and see Squeaky, lately shed been coming over to the Gryffindor table to eat with me and my friends, but today I couldnt see her anywhere.
Wheres Squeaks? Weve started going by our nick-names, its fun.
James was first to answer.
I donno, wheres Sirius?
I know where they are. Remus says knowingly.
Where? James and I ask at the same time.
Squeaky just told Sirius she wanted to show him something outside.
Really? James said, laughing.
Oh, I glance nervously out the window and my worst fear is realized as the shadow of what looks like a huge bird passes over it. I search my mind for something to distract them from the window while I go to find Feather.
Ummmso James, hows quidditch practice going?
That did the trick; James can talk for hours about quidditch. Remus looked tiredly at me, clearly wandering why I would put him through such torture.
Sorry Remus, I gotta go.
Ok, Im sure James has plenty to tell me, he smiled grimly.
I run to the Slytherin table.
Darlene I need to talk to you, its an emergency. She said goodbye to Severus whom she had just been talking to and followed me to an empty hallway.
I turned to her.
Its Squeaks; I think she might have told Sirius about
We have to find her. She cut me off and we quickly ran to the great hall and towards the door but before we went out-side I noticed Squeaks sitting at the Hufflepuff table, the other Hufflepuffs laughed as she entertained them with the days gossip.
Rebecca, we have to talk to you for a minute. Can you come with us?\
Sure^^!
The hallway from before now had several people in it so we found another one.
Did you tell Sirius?!?
Tell him what?
About our secret! yelled Darlene who was panicking as much as me.
Oh, no not really.
Darlene sighed but I asked what do you mean not really?
I didnt tell him you guys secrets.
You told him youre an animagus!? Youre lucky it was Sirius I dont think he would tell anyone.
Dont worry; hes got a secret too! Its
Darlene stopped her :
Dont tell us, youve already told enough secrets today as it is.
I was surprised, I would have thought she would have been glad to get dirt on any Gryffindor. I mean, the only reason she didnt tell mine was that I knew hers as well. I listened carefully as she continued.
Secrets are secrets, and its rude to tell them. So you had better make sure you dont go blurting out ours. DO NOT be so loose with your tongue!
Ok^^!
I glare at her.
No really, I understand ok?
Ok, whatcha think Feather?
As long as she doesnt tell mine Im good, and DONT CALL ME FEATHER! she stormed back to the great hall.
Ok, see ya Squeaks, and BE CAREFULL! I headed back to the Great Hall too.I sure hope James has finished talking about quidditch by now., I mean I like it but him...
Chapter 13
Silver walked across the grounds with Remus. It was a sunny afternoon and not a cloud touched the sky. Silver looked over at the lake, feeling more happy than shed been in a long time. Remus was talking to her, but she couldnt quite tell what he was saying, too wrapped up in the happy feeling of the afternoon. But as she turned to look at him again, the sky grew suddenly dark and black clouds snaked across the sky, leaving it completely black apart from one small area. She stared in horror as the full moon appeared clear and bright in the clearing. Then struggled against the wolf mind that had quickly begun trying to take over her own. She saw Remus. *Why is he just standing there?!* She fought desperately to stop the wolf from attacking in hopes that he would escape but the wolf lunged forward at him with a growl, teeth bared
Silver sat up with a start. She was breathing hard and covered with sweat. She turned and lit the candle by her bed, it was only a dream but terrifying none-the-less. It had felt so real. She dug out her favorite book and began to read, a technique she often used to forget bad-dreams, but this one just wouldnt go away
Chapter 14
Its been weird talking to Remus lately. That dream I had the other night keeps coming back. Im sure hed be smart enough to avoid my attack if it ever really came to that but I still cant help feeling uncomfortable when Im around him. I think Ill eat lunch with Feather today. Ah there she is, under that tree again, Im glad Severus isnt there today. He must have been too immersed in his book for even Feather today. I shut my eyes, trying to think of something to say. *Oh yeah* Id just found out Remus was a half-blood. I dont care about blood but its nice to know we come from the same kind of background. I have trouble dealing with people of pure-blood families. Most of them, like Lucius Malfoy, are too in love with themselves. I get along with Sirius fine though; youd hardly know he was one. I walk up and sit next to Feather.
Darn Im clueless, I wander how come I never figured out Remus was a half blood. Not that I care really, blood doesnt matter. I said as I began eating my lunch, Id smuggled some pretty good food out with me.
Yes surprisingly u are very clueless.......
Grrrr, wish I could argue I paused for a minute trying to think of a way to change the subject, this one wasnt going well.
Hey, Bird-brain, I said.
You know crows are very smart She answered, irritated
I know, generally they are, but this one must be a dud or something.
Says you,
Yeah, at least I have teeth.
I can fly
I can run, you can only waddle.
Crows dont waddle.
Ok not necessarily waddle, but most birds cant walk very well. I could also eat you in one mouth-full if I wanted. All you could do is drop a wall-nut on my head.
Feather glared at me before saying,
Or I could poke your eyesreally hard and they would become bloody
True, if you could get that close and live, I mean, one paw...
I look proudly at my perfectly human hands.
Feather glares at me again.
Do u have to rain on my parade?"
Yes.I answer with a satisfied grin.
I finish my food in silence and then head back to the great hall, I feel a little bit better now. I think Ill go find Remus, after all, it was just a dream
Interlude ~title:the Future~
Silver ducked as the cloaked wizard sent another spell at her. She struggled to stand and then, holding on to her badly burnt shoulder, she prepared to send a spell of her own. Before she could however, she was caught off guard by his expeliarmus. Her wand flew into the air and she was thrown hard onto her back. She sat up just in time to see another spell heading strait for her
Silvers eyes shot open, she struggled to sit up but her body ached all over. Her head was spinning and there was a slight ringing in her ears, but worst of all was the fact that she couldnt quite focus her eyes. She couldnt tell if it was day or night. She had been losing *badly*. Knowing she had survived was comforting, but she couldnt help wandering at what cost. For once in her life, she really wanted a mirror.
She gasped as the door to the room opened and felt a sharp pain in her chest. A woman with medium length, dark hair and glasses came into the room carrying a tray of food. Silver couldnt see her face as she watched the woman set down the tray but she noticed that she was wearing a medi-witch uniform. The medi-witch turned and opened the curtains.
Argh, Silver shut her eyes in pain as light poured in the window.
Oh dont make such a fuss; you always were a cry baby.
*That voice seems familiar*
Silver moaned and tried to turn away from the light.
Youve been unconscious for three days now, your burn on your shoulder is almost gone, it may or may not leave a scar its hard to tell yet. Youre lucky you were brought here; you could have died from that alone with only a muggle doctor. You have several bruised ribs so itll hurt breathing for a few days.
She continued talking like this for quite a while but Silver couldnt make any sense of it. She shut her eyes, hoping that eventually this annoying voice would go away.
Are you even listening to me? she heard the medi-witch asked in an irritated voice.
Silver tried to say no, but the sudden worsening of the pain in her ribs stopped her.
You want one of our ~feather~ pillows? Itd be easier on your ribs to have your back a little more strait.
No thnkss. Silver managed to say.
Suit yourself, Im not one to go ~moon~ing over people anyway.
*Who ~is~ this lady?* Silver was curious, but her head was still too clouded to try and think of anything at the moment. Her limited thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a growl from her stomach.
Hungry. Well arent you a girl of few words today. Yesterday you would say any old thing
Silver moaned again, what secrets had she blurted to this strange witch in her unconscious state? The medi-witch laughed quietly to herself and must have looked out the window because she said: Oh look, a crow right there outside the window.
Silver growled, she ~must~ have known she couldnt turn around to look out of the window. What kind of a crazy*Feather?* She paused, why had this name from so long ago suddenly come back to her?
Anyway heres some chocolate, (I bet you like it a lot dont you? You seem like the type) and some bread and some soup... So, whatll it be?
Feather?
I ~told you~ not to call me that anymore. The medi-witch answered, but she was smiling.
~You~, a medi-witch? Silver laughed quietly for a second before being to stop by the pain in her ribs.
Too kind for you, She laughed again.
Its perfectly normal for me; Slytherins can heal just as well as anyone else. Besides, its far more practical (and better paying) than being an ~Auror~.
Fighting death-eaters is ~far~ more interesting Silver paused too catch her breath,
than sticking band-aids on peoples paper-cuts.
Well thats not a very nice way to talk to someone who just saved you from the brink of death.
True,
Youre here arent you? You are alive where as any other witch or wizard might not have been able to save you with your serious condition. What do you say now?
Umm, thank you?
Chapter 15
You think itll actually work?
I really dont know.
I heard Squeaky laugh as she headed back to the Gryffindor table (shes a Hufflepuff yeah, but she sneaks over to eat with me almost every day now). I walk casually towards the Slytherin table and stop behind Severus. I steal one of the grapes in front of him and drop another into the plate.
Hey! he shouts but I ignore him and walk past the Slytherin table to the Gryffindor one.
I sit in between Remus and Squeaks and grab some soup, but instead of eating it I sit silently and stare at it, listening.
Suddenly the Slytherin table erupts with yells. I spin around eagerly and watch as students sitting around Severus jump up and shake their robes which were now specked with tiny black ants. I look around trying to see Severus but a girl had jumped up in front of him. I see Feather send a rather threatening look in my direction and swallow, but am distracted when I see Severus spitting out ants. Teachers rush from all directions to see whats causing all the commotion. I crack up in a fit of giggles.
I cant believe he ate it,
My laughing was soon joined by Squeaks high pitched giggle and the rest of the Gryffindor table.
An ~ant bomb~, why didnt we think of that? I heard James say to the rest of the marauders. Squeaks and I laughed even harder and explained to them how we did it, starting from learning to transfigure (of all things) grapes into ants. We watched as teachers got rid of the ants using various spells and the students calmed down. None of the teachers seemed to be suspecting anyone, but were going to the kitchens to make sure there wasnt a problem down there. After dinner we headed back to the common-room, I said goodbye to Squeaks as she headed back to her own. I finished my home-work with Lily and took to watching Sirius and Remus playing wizard chess. Its waaay better than my muggle game of chess at home; I was fascinated by the many tiny, moving peaces. It was getting late and the full-moon was tomorrow, but the sounds of my friends voices were kind of soothing so I stayed with them. Soon it was time for us to head back to our separate dorms. I said goodnight to Lily and headed over to my bed. *Shell probably notice Im not here tomorrow night* I thought, *I guess Ill just have to tell her I was sick*. I hated lying to her like that, but its better if she doesnt know and Im not supposed to tell her anyway. *But I still feel bad lying so much*
Chapter 16
Christmas was coming and decorations were springing up all around the school. Even McGonagall had a bit of pine tucked in her hat. It was the last weekend before Christmas vacation so I decided to go see if Feather was staying for the holidays. I found her with a trunk full her belongings and her owl in his cage tied on top. I figured it was pretty obvious, so instead I wished her a merry Christmas and set off to find Remus. I found him standing with James, Sirius and Peter around a large parcel.
What is it? I asked.
Only the best racing broom there is! I laughed; James was holding out a new broom, it was sleek, polished and even smelled new. Lily was shaking her head as he bounced up and down like a little kid.
Um are you even allowed a broom yet? I asked.
Im not allowed to fly it here, but Im allowed to at home! *I guess hes going home for Christmas too.* Peter was telling random people about the vacation he was going to be going on. Remus was quiet so I asked him if he was staying.
Yeah, he sounded a little sad.
Is there a reason why? I asked hoping I wasnt being to nosy, though I figured I probably was.
My parents want a peaceful vacation together, so Im staying. He said sounding a little sad. *Hes so quiet his parents must be fussy if they cant handle having him around*
Thats ok, Im staying too. I said smiling. I wasnt planning to before but I didnt mind staying. I felt a little bad for my family but I was sure theyd say its ok. Squeaky was staying behind too. I totally understand her parents leaving ~her~ home but were cousins so shes an excuse to stay.
Thats nice, he said looking slightly relieved.
What about you Sirius?
No way Im going home, I was surprised, his voice sounded a lot colder than usual, but now I was the one who was relieved. *So now were not the ~only~ ones staying anyway.
I spent the rest of the evening saying many good-byes and Merry Christmases then headed up to the owlery to tell my parents I wanted to stay for Christmas.
The next few days went by pretty peacefully. Everyone who wasnt staying had already gone home, so Squeaks and I had tons of free time on our hands. We spent a lot of it with Remus and Sirius and the rest exploring what we were allowed to of the castle. The endless supply of different rooms kept us well entertained, though Squeaks and I ended up in the hospital wing once for doxy bites. The thought that I hadnt gotten a present for Remus yet was the heaviest thing on my mind. Squeaks was making her gifts by hand I swear if I hear no peaking one more time Ill go mad. I sent (again using a school owl) Feather a small gift of muggle chocolates. *At least she probably wont ~burn~ them or anything*. I also sent James a portable broomstick servicing kit (for the wizard on the go) and Peter some Jelly Bellies and a note saying here is the muggle version of Bertie Botts (Id tried to describe them to him earlier in the year). I gave Sirius a bronze medallion with the shape of a dogs paw print engraved on one side and a star on the other from a muggle who makes them with a medieval coin press. I also bought a velvet lily for Lily and have some velvet dress-robes my mom made for me to give to Squeaks. But I still didnt have anything for Remus.
I went back to the girls dorm and sat down on my bed. I decided to give up thinking of a gift 'till morning when I noticed my little wolf figurine watching me. I had bought it at one of the first wizard-shops Id been to. It was small (about 5 tall) and incredibly life like and had been enchanted to walk around its little bed of grass and watch people come and go. It was perfect! Now I cant wait till Christmas so I can give it to him.
Chapter 17
Umm tell me again, ~why~ are you giving Darlene a pencil for Christmas?
I already told you cause her favorite one broke during our class together.
I look down over her shoulder at the pencil shes holding.
Ok but do you ~really~ need to wrap it that many times! I said staring at the never ending loops of ribbon curled around it, making it appear striped. *Wow this is the first time Ive seen her Hufflepuff show through, no other house would be patient enough to wrap an entire pencil with thin ribbon, evenly spaced one centimeter apart* I leave the library and head out to the grand staircase. On the way to the Gryffindor common-room I walked past a man I didnt recognize as one of our teachers, on second glance I noticed it wasmy uncle???
Ummm, Uncle Greg is that you? This was far-out, he lives in New Zealand, what on earth was he doing here?
Ah Iumyeah. He looked really uncomfortable about talking to me here. I noticed we were standing just outside Professor Djolis office.
What are you doing here? I thought you and your family were busy selling vegetables right now back in New Zealand
Well Iuhoh I might as well tell you, you wont give up till you have an answer right? I grin and nod.
You are ~too~ much like your motherany way Im here because because Ive taken up your father's job, as an auror.
~Wow~ no way! Umm Auntie Leslies ok with this?
After a little convincing I look at him skeptically.
Ok a ~lot~ of convincing. I go to ask more but he interrupts...
I have to go see Professor Dumbledore, goodbye.
Umm ok, bye! but he was already gone. *That was just too weird*
