If any files are incomplete on your Newsreader, check that the post has had time to completely propagate. If any files remain incomplete, un-subscribe from the Group, shut down, re-boot and subscribe again to bring all Headers down from your Newsserver. THEN & ONLY THEN should you request a repost, detailing that you have done this and which files remain unavailable. Use a real Newsreader or expect to be ignored.

    Newbies Please Read This
  1. Do not use Outlook Express, get a real News Reader like Free Agent or Gravity.
  2. Learn how to use them before asking questions. That means downloading small files and working up to larger files.
  3. Learn how to use Zip, Rar, HJSplit, IrfanView and your movie player.
  4. Try & understand the difference between file types.
  5. Don't live on the DeskTop. Live only in Explorer so you can see the files, types and sizes. Tools/Folder Options/View and un-check Hide File Extensions. How else are you going to notice a Dialer or Spyware?
  6. Get a firewall, anti-virus and Ad-Aware programs by Googling. They are free and will save you a lot of grief. Don't think you can get by without them because I sure can't.
    Check the following:
  1. Download HJSplit - HJSplit is freeware which splits & joins big files.
  2. Place all the files (except the PAR files) in a new folder.
  3. Run HJSplit to combine parts into a single file.
  4. Make sure each file is the same size (kb) except for the last file, which is smaller.
  5. Launch HJSplit, click on the 'join' button, navigate to the directory that contains the first part (.001), select it, click 'open' and HJSplit will do the rest.
  6. Play the movie. If you have a problem, check that you have the latest codecs installed:-
  7. If the movie is OK, move it to your regular storage and delete the folder with the parts.
  8. Par files: Use FsRaid and the .PAR and .P01 sections, as necessary, to fix/regenerate any broken/missing parts.
To Check Installed Codecs in Win2K:

  1. Start
  2. Settings
  3. Control Panel
  4. System
  5. Hardware tab
  6. Device Manager
  7. Sound, video and game controllers
  8. Video Codecs and/or Audio Codecs
  9. Properties

Google for Win98 & XP codec locations, I've forgotten. XP sux imho.
(I added a few at the bottom of this document. Peterbilt)

All credit to the original Posters, I just edit, color correct, re-size & re-encode as I feel appropriate & sometimes add some background music.

If you have a good collection of movies, please post them with preview/s and an info sheet like this, after you have checked them. If your clip is worth posting, it is worth doing properly.

Sundry Info:-

I use BSplayer for Avi & Mpg movies and Media Player Classic with RealAlternative and QuickTimeAlternative for RM & MOV formats. Available from http://www.k-litecodecpack.com/ Divx 5.05 is available from http://www.divx.com 3ivX is available from http://codeccorner.com/ look under AVI

I suggest you remove all your codecs and start with a clean machine.

Dis-associate Windows Media Player from all movie files & block it from accessing the 'Net with your firewall. Like they say: A computer without Windows Media Player is like a dog without a brick tied to its tail.
