| "The King" Elvis Presley | |||||||||||
| Elvis Aaron Presley was born in Mississippi in 1935. He moved to Memphis in 1948, and the magic began to happen. He learned to play guitar and began writing music while still only young, until he won a record contract in 1956. Already word had spread all over the US, and Elvis was a sensation. The next year he won a huge contract with RCA Victor, and Elvis was soon a millionaire. Songs such as "Hound Dog", "Jailhouse Rock" and "Love me Tender" became worldwide hits, and Elvis became the biggest singer on the planet. In all he sold over a billion records. Once you have conquered the music industry, whats the next logical step? Conquering the film industry of course. Strangely and rather controversially, Elvis was stopped by his management from appearing on the kind of programs he used to be on, while his movie career kicked in. In this period fans became tired of only ever seeing Elvis in movies and special shows, and his popularity began to dip in the late 60s. The movie career never really did take off though. Elvis's films were terrible at best, apart from only a few notable ones which can still only be classed as mediocre. The movies were relative successes though, if poor in themselves. But Elvis can be commended on his service to the US army, were he was treated like any other soldier. Sadly, he wasnt so strong when it came to burgers and beer, and Elvis's health began to fall. The morning newspapers on August 16th, 1979 shocked the world, with the news that "The King" has died. Its become a popular conspiracy theory that Elvis is still alive in an alien spaceship, or faked his death to become a normal person again, being sick of the attention he was recieving Were ever Elvis is nobody really knows. But those who doubt that Elvis was, and probably still is the most popular person in the world should look what people call him. How many other people are known the world over by their first name? In his era Elvis was able to change popular culture as we know it and dominated the music scene for over 2 decades. Elvis is still King. |
