History: The AIS has a background in the Twilight War, when in the tumult created after the nuclear strikes and the breakdown of the Civilian Government, the Joint Chiefs of Staff took over governing the country. In 1999, the US Congress held session again in Omaha, Nebraska, and formed a rival civilian government. The major intelligence agency at the time, the CIA, sided with the civilian government ( the CIA never did get along well with the military and vice-versa.). The Joint Chiefs, being left without an agency that could conduct field work, took the DIA, and formed a field branch out of it's Counter Intelligence section of the Defense Investigative Service. Until 2020, the two agencies, while not really enemies, didn't really cooperate either ( however, at least they didn't kill each other like KGB/GRU agents). In 2020, with the reunification of the two governments and the need to fight New America, the two agencies were merged into the AIS and their first headquarters was in Memphis. During the dozen year civil war, the AIS did everything it could to both disrupt New American stability ( ie support local partisans) and disrupt Mexican arms shipments. After the civil war and during reconstruction, it infiltrated many organizations overseas and gained much commercial and political information with which to assist America's recovery. In the 2080's it assisted many anti-Mexican rebels and in 2099, it helped Texan Nationalists overthrow Mexican control over Texas, thus turning the nation into a friendly buffer state. It also supported US efforts in the war with Mexico from 2103-06, after that, it again supported anti-Mexican rebels in California until they were crushed in 2110.
After this whirlwind of activity, the agency turned it's attention to the stars, and with that idea in mind gathered much in the way of commercial information of the Pentepods for the US government, as well as spied on French military and Commercial interests throughout settled space, it was this work that exposed the Rochembau scandal of 2174 where the French were caught supporting pro-Mexican terrorists on the Texan colony of 82 Eridani. It was the digital pictures of AIS intelsats that exposed France's duplicity to the world, on the one hand, cursing Mexico, but on the other supporting it's reign of terror, US and Australian politicians had a field day. For the next 10 years, France's DGSE came under intense scrutiny and until 2289 and the military coup, it was seen as a bunch of bumbling buffoons.
In other work, the AIS provided Intel data to the French and Japanese during the Central Asian War ( although the cooperation was a lot closer with Japan). But, during the War of German Reunification, the AIS secretly funneled arms and money to German reunifcationalist guerillas on the French Arm and provided intelligence data to German commanders. Not to mention that there was some covert support of the Joi guerillas ( this caused a scandal when it was discovered in 2293. More recently, during the Kafer War, the AIS had been the one agency predicting that the Kafer defeat at Aurore was not the last anyone would hear of them ( in fact, RADM David Parker's recon of the Arcturus system was motivated partly by AIS analysis). None listened, and the carnage of 2301-03 has itself to show for it.
Now, the AIS is busy providing help to SAMN ( though TENB does much more of this work), and tracking Kafer movements, in 2304, the AIS opened it's own Xenobiological Office of Intelligence which now handles all Extraterrestrial life forms and how they relate to US interests.
Field Branch: The "James Bond" side of the Service, they are the spies that risk their necks to get the data for the folks in Analysis Branch. They are of two sub-types here, the normal Covert Operatives that are the real "spies" and the "Service Strike Force" ( SSF) folks that do the dirty, deniable work that sometimes needs to be done and in a way that it doesn't point to US interests. This isn't a large branch, maybe making up 1-5% of the service's 30,000 employees.
Analysis Branch: These are the folks that work out of both the AIS HQ in Reston and the various embassies and consulates of the United States. These folks take the info and make sense out of it, they are the "9 to 5 warriors" of the intelligence game that influence the policy makers and make it all make sense ( or say "the hell if I know"). This branch is the majority, with 60% of the employees here.
Admin. Branch: The Admin. Branch are the guys that keep AIS running, the accountants, the secretaries, the blind lunch counter guys ( they are hired because they can't see sensitive documents), and all the other mundane functions needed to keep an organization of this size running. They also control the security of the HQ in Reston, they make up about 35% of the Service.
History: The DIA has been around since 1947 and the formation of the Department of Defense, it is the primary intelligence organ of the DOD and provides data pursuant to the requests of the Joint Chiefs. Due to events of the Twilight War, the agency has no field branch and mostly does analysis of data brought in from either overt sources ( Military Attaches and After Action Reports) and covert sources ( AIS mostly). It's huge database on the world's militaries, located in the depths of the Pentagon ( known as GMID for Global Military Intelligence Database) is the envy of the world's intelligence agencies ( including the AIS whom has been fighting a bureaucratic turf war over the system). All in all, there isn't a fact military that the DIA doesn't know, and it is setting up a International version that will have data on the Kafers, it will be known as the KID or Kafer Intelligence Database, and is due to go on line in 2310.
Organization: The DIA has over 5000 people in it's employ, and every US military attache answers to it. The analysis departments are set up on a regional basis detailed below.
The TEN-B is a new bureau, having been established in 2296 to assist fighting piracy, terrorism and other forms of extra-national crimes. It is run by the Treasury Department and cooperates closely with SAMN and other National and International Law Enforcement agencies. It is a small agency, with no more than 1500 agents, but their investigative skill and daring ( during the bust of a wanted Provolutionist on King, several agents drove a Songbird through the back door of his home and surprised him in his sleep) are legendary. The agents are give a lot of leeway, but egregious breaches of law aren't tolerated by the Director back in Reston. Each embassy has at least 2 agents and more are always on call at various US colonies and on Terra.
The FBI is an organization that is the oldest one in the US Intelligence community, the bureau being established in 1930. With the passage of time, the agency is the number one domestic Law enforcement bureau in America, it also handles the investigation and arrest of all suspected foreign intelligence agents in American territory. It's numbers are small, no more than 500 is reported, but there is a lot of skill on the part of these folks, as they have humiliated the DGSE and INAP plenty of times in their efforts to infiltrate US interests. Usually operating in teams of 2-4 in US starports and airports as well as embassies and high-security installations, these folks are truly feared by the foreign agents sent to test their skill against them.
