The Fury-class was originally designed as a successor to the Sufren-class
missile cruiser, which had served with distinction in both the Central
Asian War and the German War of Reunification. The original specification
simply required the Fury to be a faster, better armed missile cruiser
than the Sufren.
The Kafer war changed all that. While existing vessels could engage and
survive a confrontation with the Kafers at a distance, up close the human
warships were no match for the more heavily armed and armoured alien vessels.
This forced naval architects to rethink their designs.
The Fury is a gamble. It was proven earlier ( with the Orage-class
frigate) that a well armed warship is no match for a cruiser carrying
lots of missiles. However, the Fury is well-armed; equipped with 6
( highly experimental) Guiscard LEX-2000 Particle accelerator systems, and
heavily armoured, the Fury can stand its ground against a Beta.
Currently there is only one ship of the class, the Fury. Two other ships
of the same class are under construction, Defiant and the Vengeance. As
of May 2303, the Fury is stationed at Beta Canum under the command of
Admiral Rochemont.
