Mohammed Hassan was born in Kizimkazi on the southern tip of the island of Unguja (Zanzibar) where his parents owned and operated a charter tour boat. Despite the popularity of Kizimkazi as a tourist resort the family business rarely made a profit and the young Mohammed spent much of free time out of school working on the boat or selling ice cream to supplement his income. His youthful good looks also allowed him to cut a swathe through the teenage daughters of the French and German tourists who descended on Unguja en masse every summer. As the eldest of four sons Mohammed fully expected to ultimately take over the family business but his parents, aware of his obvious intelligence, pushed him in the direction of higher education and the University of Dar es Salaam.

At university Mohammed initially accepted an Army scholarship merely to alleviate his tight financial circumstances, however, once he started the required training he found that not only was it easy but that he enjoyed the military life. Since then he has risen fast, but not spectacularly so, through the ranks before being appointed in 2301 as Commanding Officer of the 102nd Infantry Regiment at Kigoma as part of the Tanzanian military�s organisational shake up in the wake of the Vah! invasion. Less than a year later his regiment, a largely Masai formation, volunteered as a unit to fight as part of the International Brigade. The regiment was resdisignated the First Askari za Dunia Regiment (1st AzD) and, along with the newly constituted 2nd Askari Za Dunia Regiment, it became the core of the Tanzanian Expeditionary Force with Colonel Mohammed Hassan named as overall commander.

Mohammed Hassan is a tall, heavily built man with a very dark complexion and slightly Arabic features. His good looks and always immaculate turn out means that there is still a touch of the beach lothorio of his youth about him. He is respected if not popular with the soldiers under his command and while some ridicule is directed at his fastidiousness nobody underestimates his intelligence.

He has been married for 13 years and has three children.
