Overview:

One of the pains of 2300, is making all of the rolls for shrapnel/fragmentation, especially for groups of NPCs.

The following tables were done with an old spreadsheet of mine ( while searching for another old one for a friend), so I quickly finished the last bit and here are some of the results.

The spreadsheet figured out all possible outcomes, when a person is exposed to standard fragmentation ( as given in the Director's Guide).

One die roll now tells you the worst wound taken by the exposed person, based on how much of their body was visible to the blast.  It uses just the standard ( not the optional) wound system ( only head and upper chest are the lethal spots, etc.).

If a Light wound does come up, the victim on average has received two different Light wounds -- so reduce initiative accordingly.

About the Kafer Tables:

Here are the preliminary fragmentation values for the Kafer:

Assumptions ( looking at the Kafer location chart on page 24 of the Director's Guide).

  1. the skull - the carapace protects just half ( the lower 50%) of the back side of it ( location 1).
  2. the torso - the carapace also protects just the back of the torso ( locations 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6).
  3. the "partial cover" line falls below locations 3 and 4, yet above locations 5 and 6.

This means the Upper body is locations 1,2,3,4,9,10.
The Lower body is locations 5,6,7,8.

GDW never said where the Upper/Lower cover line fell on Kafers, so this is what I used in my games.  If anyone has a better idea, please let me ( kevinc AT cnetech DOT com) know.

D10 versus D20:

The D20 tables are a little more accurate, especially for the Kafers, but some "die-size purists" may refuse to use anything but a d6 and a d10 while playing 2300AD.  So they can use the D10 tables.

Future Plans:

Quick roll tables for various human nation's standard infantry armor kits ( various mixes of helmet, vest, and bodysuit types).

I'm also working on shotgun tables ( for human and Kafer weapons).
