One of my players just re-read Heinlein's "Starship Troopers". He wants to run a military K-9 ( canine) dog handler, because he thinks it would be great at spotting Kafer.
Here is how I would make a German Shepard. Does anyone with experience with that breed of dog, or guard/K-9 dogs have comments, suggestions?
I used the animal design rules on pp 98-101 in the Director's Guide ( DG).
I classified a German Shepard as a Chaser ( niche #3) since a wolf is listed there as an example.
I wanted a weight of 40kg. So back calculating, my 2d6 size roll needs to be a 6.
So by the form on page 100 in the DG.
1) Initiative: 6
2) Melee to hit: Routine ( 6+)
3) Size: 5 ( 2d6 roll -1) = 40 kg
4) Speed: 3 ( size -2) = 110 m / action
5) Armor: none
6) Wound Potential Modifier: -2 ( NOTE: modifies severity of hits ON the animal, not BY animal)
7) Consciousness Level: 1
8) Life Level: 5
9) DPV: 0.2 ( 0.1 by table, but seemed too low). Also a dog can make a diving blow ( p.53 DG) once at start of combat.
10) Signature: -3
For a trained police or military K-9, I would give the dog the following skills:
Melee 2 ( attack trained, added to attack rolls) Reconnaissance( really just Perception/Observation) 3 Stealth 2 Tracking 3Name: German Shepard Niche: Chasers (Wolf) Num Appearing: 1d10 Encountered: 7 or less Attacks on: 6 or less
Size: 5 Mass: 40 kg Initiative: 6 Speed: 110 m per action Melee to Hit: 6+ DPV: 0.2 + Special Armor: 0 Wounded Mod: -2 Consciousness: 1 Life Level: 5 Signature: -3
* For each chaser in excess of victim(s) modify attack die roll by -1 Special ability: can make a diving blow( p.53 DG) once at start of combat.
