The one thing that struck me about 2300AD was how much the recent history looked like the past, especially from 1870 to 1918, and even on to early 1940's.

The Franco-Prussian war of 1870 compared with the German war of reunification, and its aftermath.  Both resulted in the French taking a beating, and governments fell.

America is isolationist, yet follows 'Manifest Destiny', the 'Monroe Doctrine', and Teddy Roosevelt's "Walk softly, but carry a big stick", in its own backyard, or should I say 'arm'.

The US Marines were very active during this span, and the US Navy was growing in strength, and technology.

America comes to Europe's aid in WW1 vs. troops ( mainly Marines) and ships to the aid of the French Arm.

The US economy was growing into a silent powerhouse, setting the stage for WW2 production levels.  So the idea that America in 2300 is becoming a major player, may not be so off-base as some would claim.

The first Kafer invasion ground combat ( circa 2297?), especially on Aurora, reminded me of trench warfare.  Limited aviation, and vehicles, due to Kafer Snapfire missiles.  Lots of slugging it out on foot with Kafer warbands, plus much artillery in my own campaigns.

The actual Invasion ( circa 2300) felt almost WW2-ish ( specifically 1939-1941).  Kafer Attack = part German Blitzkrieg, and part Pearl Harbor.

'Operation Overlord' was definitely Pacific Theatre island hopping.

GDW seemed to really like the 1870-1911 time frame, after all their next game was Space:1889 ( Great Game also!), and it was also set during this period.  Historically, it was a time of dynamic political/social/economic change.  A great 'time period' for role-playing, even when borrowed/transported to 2300AD's history.

Just some quick thoughts on the "Where is 2300AD coming from, and going towards" debate.
