This 61 Cygni sourcefile is designed to the give the director of a 2300 AD campaign all the background information necessary to add this system to his campaign.  This information is broken into four different subsections entitled: Stellar Data, Background, NPC's and Adventure Ideas.  Further information will be added in the future and therefore this file is dated 19 October 1989.

Organization within the seven asteroidal belts of the inner systems is extremely loose with frequent collisions between asteroids of many shapes and sizes.  Preliminary surveys discovered many irregular asteroids with mass both approximating and exceeding the mass of Terra's moon.  The entire area of the inner system is of immense interest to planetary scientists both for the large number of asteroidal systems and the apparent unsettled nature of their orbits.  Go-Shirakawa and Go-Toba are rather typical gas giants about which very little survey data has been collected.  All four of Sohei's planets are of irregular shape and relatively small in size leading to speculation that they were orginally part of the inner systems belt of asteroids.  The initial survey performed by Tosa indicated a high likelyhood of heavy metals on Onjoji which lead to its selection for the system's first outpost.  Throught the system there is no habitat suitable for supporting human life.

Attached is a short listing of stars within 11.55 light years of 61 Cygni and their distances.

Within unassisted range of five other members of the cluster, 61 Cygni is the natural location for initial development within the 61 Cygni cluster.  Further development will probably focus on several arms.  61Cygni to DM +59 1915 to Sigma Draconis ( a K0 star) to Chi Draconis ( a F7 star) or 61 Cygni to either Ross 248 or Kruger 60 to DM +43 4305 to Eta Cassiopei ( a G0 star) to Mu Cassiopei ( a G5 star).  Both of the above arms could be shortened by going directly to other gateway stars but convenience and universality will in all likelyhood prevail.

BACKGROUND DATA ON 61 CYGNI SYSTEM

Although it is located only 10.99 light years away from Sol, 61 Cygni was inaccesible to most Human ships until the discovery of Kuroishi to serve as a suitable intermediate discharge point.  On the edge of a cluster of 31 closely connected worlds, 61 Cygni was first entered by the Japanese Ship Tosa on 14 November 2298.  Tosa spent ten and a half weeks insystem performing an intial survey and determining that there was no suitable human habitat.  In March of 2299 after the Tosa report and a similar report on Kuroishi had been received and disseminated among secure channels in the Japanese government, the government contacted seven Japanese deep space construction firms and solicited designs for construction of two habitat facilities to be located in the Kuroishi and 61 Cygni systems.  Because of the importance of its position the Kuroishi facility was given first attention in both size and speed of construction.

Maitsu Kaigyo, whose headquarters are located in Amaterasu on Tirane was the design contest winner and work began on 28 Aug 2299 at Kuroishi and 31 Dec 2299 at 61 Cygni.  The 61 Cygni outpost, which has unofficially become known as "Gempei Station", is located on Onjoji and about 75 % of the facility is built under the surface of the small planetoid.  Work was greatly aided when, as hoped, heavy metals including Gold and Platinum were discovered among the waste rock removed to make room for the station.  "Gempei Station" was completed on 15 June 2302 and now houses between 500 and 600 people of which 425 are permanent staff.

In keeping with other non-corporate Japanese holdings, the government of the station, and de facto, the system, is an independent governing council appointed by and responsible to the Emperor and his Privy Council.  Theoretically equal in power to each of the governing councils over other Japanese territories the 61 Cyngi council is in fact dominated by the council of nearby Amaterasu.  Exploration into the inner asteroid belts and to the two gas giants is only now becoming an ongoing reality.  An offical team from Todai and Hokudai, with Privy Council powers, is presently basing from Gempei outpost and charting the inner asteroidal belts.  The lack of organization in the belts forces any penetration to be of short duration and has hindered efforts to fully survey and explore them.

NPC'S OF 61 CYGNI SYSTEM

Watanabe Enjiro

Watanabe is a full professor of Exo-Biology at Hokudai ( Hokumon Daigaku) at Nagaiwan in Amaterasu.  A co-director of the government sponsored mission to survey and chart the inner portions of the 61 Cygni system he is constantly bickering with Hoshi about the location and nature of the exploratory missions.  Watanabe is intent on making every effort to discover any form of life possibly present in the system.  He desires to concentrate the mission's effort in several likely locations of the Kiyomori belt in an exhaustive search for evidence of life.  Not particularly noted for his brillance or the depth of his work he was given the co-directorship because of his excellent ties to the Amaterasu council and the simple fact that no one else applied for it.  Beyond all else Watanabe desires to end his career with a glorious discovery sure to put him in the textbooks.

Hoshi Kentaro

Hoshi is a full professor of Planetary Geophysics at Todai ( Tokyo Daigaku) and a young buck wellnoted in the field for his new and controversial theories on the formation of planets.  In 61 Cygni he sees an excellent opportunity to finally confirm his life's work.  Convinced that there is nothing beyond the forces of nature at work in the system he is remains intent on obtaining as broad a spectrum of samples as possible and avoiding a concentration of work or effort in any one location.

Sakura Saiichi

Sakura is chief of space operations for the outpost and a member of the 61 Cygni governing council.  Eagerly awaiting the time when 61 Cygni is opened the humanity at large, he has been placed in the role of mediator between Hoshi and Watanabe.  Outwardly neutral he secretly favors the position of Watanbe in the hope that a spectacular discovery by him will lead to an early opening of the system.  He always manages to get Watanabe the ships and equipment he needs while at times stalling Hoshi on the grounds that he just does have enough equipment.  He has the complete support and agreement of the 61 Cygni governing council.

ADVENTURE IDEAS FOR 61 CYGNI SYSTEM

  • A preliminary report has recently been filed with the council to the effect that an extremely large mass of metallic material has been found in low orbit by the sensors of IRF 346, a drone orbiting Go-Toba.
  • The ongoing debate regarding the origin of the asteroidal belts and the friction between Hoshi and Watanabe.  The mission is always in need of experienced hands willing to penetrate the inner system.
  • 61 Cygni was designed to serve as a jump off point for exploration of the remainder of 61 Cygni cluster.  Working against time in trying to explore and stake out the prime systems before general access to the cluster many ships need experienced explorers and are willing to make an expedition on up the cluster very lucrative.
