Morning Light  January 21, 1863

 Morning Light, an 8-gun ship, was built in 1853 by William Cramp at Kensington, PA. and launched on the 15th of August 1853. It was purchased by the Navy on the 2nd of September in 1861 at New York and commissioned on the 21st of November in 1861 at New York Navy Yard, Acting Volunteer Lt. Henery T. More in command. 
      After fitting out for combat, Morning Light sailed from New York to cruise the lower east coast in search of Confederate privateers and blockade runners. Morning Light returned to New York arriving 28th or Febuary in 1862. 
      Assigned to Flag Officer David G. Farragut's West Gulf Blockading Squadron, Morning Light departed New York in March with provisions for ships in the Mississippi and the surrounding area.
