.... ......The re-organised 6th Airborne
Division was ordered to Palestine as part of the
Imperial Strategic Reserve stationed in the
Middle East. The division eventually was to
consist of nine parachute battalions in three
brigades. The division, though intended by the
War Office to be kept clear of internal security
duties, was inevitably drawn into the thankless
and bitter conflict against Jewish terrorists who
were trying to create a situation whereby
unlimited numbers of immigrants would be allowed
into the country. In 1947 the United Nations
agreed that Palestine should be partitioned
between Jewish and Arab inhabitants. On its
return from Palestine, the 6th Airborne Division
was finally disbanded.
