I would like to say that I was very happy to find your site next to mine in the Aircraft Carriers of the World Ring. I enjoyed my visit as an old USS Hancock (CVA-19) sailor, and never heard of the USS Cowpens before this visit, but what a story! Thanks s much, for all of us Ex-Navy men and women, and also in behalf our youth today, who need to learn about this part of history, and also for those sailors still alive today, who served in her, and for those who lost their lives trying to save her. I especially enjoyed the Typhoon Cobra segment! How well I know what it's like to endure such storms, and what excitement! May you have Fair Winds and following seas, Anchors Aweigh! Jake

A real fine site you should be proud. I served on the USS Knapp DD 653 as a torpedman in 1944/45 and we crossed your path (wake) several times. Knapp was in T/F 38.3 58.3 also shared your wild ride in "Cobra" and "Viper" I noticed that most of the DANFS never mention "Cobra and Viper", I wonder why? We were there when the Princton CVL 23 went down (a very sad day). I was 18 years old and feared nothing. I came back in the Korean war and served on the Battan CVL29, so I walked in your shoes a little. Yo did a great job on your site SS&FW Dave Gauthier

Dear Sir, My Dad Walter H. Owen was an Aviation Ordinance Man on CVL27 Langley. Thank you for constructing this site for these Carriers. If you look at their individual records you see that they gave more bang for the buck than any other ship class in he War.

My father, William F. Meyers is a plank owner from the " Mighty Moo ". One day while walking to his job at a steel mill in Pa., he tossed his lunch pail over a fence and hitchhiked to Philadelphia and joined the navy. His first ship was the USS Cowpens an as I understand it he saw considerable action while aboard. We also have some of the newspapers that were printed on board during WWII. I'm sure he has other rare momentos tucked away and I would be happy to scan them and send them to you if your interes ed. One of the reasons I bought a computer was so I could research my fathers career, as he was never one to talk about it much. I am very proud of the sacrifice our fathers made for our freedoms. I salute my father and all the men who served. Thank You Franco Meyers

Thank you for your great web site. I am the son of Dorethy "Pauline" Donnell (Price), sister of Lt. Commander Robert H. Price. I am 38 now, and finding out about my family history has been a real importance these days. The events of my uncles death wasn't spoken of very often as a younger man, so finding the "events of typhoon cobra" was very touching, and helped clear up a lot of mystery. From what my mother says, "they couldn't go into a lot of details back then because of the war". I am copying all he contents of the web page and sending it to her in Florida, where my parents reside. Thank you again. John Donnell, Sr. 810 E. Adams Washington, IL 61571

I served on the Yorktown CV 10 '43-'46 and remember making raids with the Cowpens and other CVL's. I was in a 40mm gun crew on the island structure which afforded me an excellent view of ships in the force with us. Good luck.

I have heard that there is an Independence Class CVL in New Orleans, what is the prospect of preserving that ship. I am a member of the organizations that are attempting to save the USS Hornet and the USS Iowa as museum ships in the Bay Area. The USS Hornet is currently at Alameda Naval Air Station, and the USS Iowa will eventually be towed to San Francisco. There a e plans to bring the USS Midway to either Eureka or San Diego.
